California Gov. Gavin Newsom to face recall election
Source: CNN
By Alexandra Meeks and Paul LeBlanc,
(CNN)California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom will face a recall election, marking just the second time in state history that a special election will be held to recall a sitting governor.
State officials confirmed Wednesday that a recall election will proceed after just 43 people withdrew their signatures from petitions to recall the governor during a 30-day window required by state law.
As a result, California's Department of Finance will now begin estimating the costs of the recall -- including costs of holding it as a special election or as part of the next regularly scheduled election -- which will then be submitted to the governor, the lieutenant governor, the secretary of state and the chairperson of the Joint Legislative Budget Committee by August 5, according to a letter outlining the process from California Secretary of State Shirley Weber. A spokesperson for California's Department of Finance previously told CNN the recall would cost about $215.2 million. A date has not yet been set.
The recall drive has been fueled by anger over the restrictions Newsom put in place to curb the spread of Covid-19 throughout last year and during an alarming surge in cases in California during the winter holiday months.

(24,396 posts)to keep down voter participation. The less time the knuckle draggers have to advertise the recall the better.
Ive already donated to the fight the recall effort.
Theres always millions of $ available to RW assholes to do their political BS here in CA. Newsom is very popular here, hes handing out demanded-by-law rebates due to our huge surplus, and hes polling like 20 points higher than the recall effort.

I definitely have my "issues" with a number of "stupid" things he's said and done, other wise referred to as "unforced errors". But as I remind my friends and neighbors who are all low income seniors, never would we have received the benefits we've been awarded during the pandemic in terms of Cal Fresh (ebt) and just this week an extra $600 in California Stimulus checks if any Republican governed our state.
Yeah he's said a number of cringe worthy statements, gaffs, got busted attending soirees just as he ordered tougher restrictions in the middle of the shutdown, BUT corrections and apologies as appropriate were made.
In the meantime, we have Democratic Party control of the Executive and State Legislature, which we absolutely must maintain, and I remind them what it was like for the poor and low wage earners, fixed income seniors etc under Republican control.
The reminders shuts them up pretty quick and then I don't hear complaints any more, these checks and temporary food stamp increases had significantly helped us throughout all of this.

(21,155 posts)Why should the tax payers of California have to pay? The regular election is a year away and if hes hated enough hell be voted out in November 2022.
I am a 4th generation Californian and Im pissed the state is forced to waste money. What ever happened to fiscal conservatives?

(6,531 posts)He didn't cause this problem. He would have been criticized if he had done nothing. Everybody had to restrict themselves because it was (and is) the sensible thing to do. What a waste of time and money! I really dislike Repubs. This is all a political move to turn the state Red. All those eager Repubs ready to step into his shoes are bound to be disappointed.
Everyone now has to turn out two years in a row. Maximum effort! We are going to quash this recall and win the Midterms. It is amazing to see how the Repubs have turned fascist. I'm sad for my country.
People aren't going to like it, but just pay attention to what is happening with variant D. You are now seeing country after country backtrack and retreat to their previous lockdown positions. This is not an easy fight. Instead of attacking Newsom, we should be looking around to see how we can fight more effectively. Letting this virus wash over us and kill us was never a brilliant move a la Trump.
