Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday she would create a new committee to investigate what she said are “many questions” about the events leading up to the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol and the federal response to that day.

"This morning, with great solemnity and sadness, I’m announcing the House will be establishing a select committee on the Jan. 6 insurrection," Pelosi said.

After Senate Republicans filibustered legislation establishing an independent Sept.-11-style commission, some Democrats have pushed for a select committee to investigate despite private fears that a party-line probe could inflame partisan tensions, as a small but vocal faction of the GOP downplayed the violence of the Jan. 6 attack.

A select committee allows Democrats to combine existing investigations but risks being perceived as partisan. Democrats heavily criticized Republicans’ select committee to investigate the 2012 attacks in the Libyan city of Benghazi, for example.

I’m glad she’s doing this. The GQP had their chance to do this in a bipartisan manner but just dug their heels in and rejected it outright. They will live to regret this.

They don't get to control the dialogue. Who cares what is perceived as partisan? They didn't want an investigation at all. They shut themselves out.

I hope--oh G-d, I hope!--that the results are honestly and openly presented to the American people. Not like what happened with Mueller. I cried after that report was redacted, mutilated and suppressed, and I have no more tears! I want to know the effing truth, right down to which Repub aholes in Congress aided and abetted the incident. I want to see someone held accountable.
