Barr describes his break with Trump and 'bulls***' claims of election fraud
Source: Yahoo News
Former Attorney General William Barr bluntly dismissed some of former President Donald Trump's election fraud allegations as "bulls***" in new interviews published Sunday in the Atlantic.
My attitude was: It was put-up or shut-up time, Barr recalled at one point. If there was evidence of fraud, I had no motive to suppress it. But my suspicion all the way along was that there was nothing there. It was all bulls***.
The comment was part of multiple interviews Barr did this spring with ABC News' Jonathan Karl, who wrote the Atlantic article describing Barrs break with Trump in the aftermath of the 2020 election.
Trump lost that election to now-President Biden, but had sought to overthrow the will of the voters by pushing a mix of conspiracy theories and outright falsehoods claiming he had actually won key states. Trump was clearly hoping that Barrs Justice Department would help him in the effort. Barr had been widely seen as a Trump loyalist, and the attorney general had drawn widespread criticism for his rollout of the Mueller report.

(9,696 posts)by saying that election fraud was BS. You cut and run. Maybe if you had stayed in your position until the end of trumps term you could have done more to prevent 1/6. Maybe not, but you didn't try.

(27,451 posts)If Barr broke with Trump he sure was lazy ass about it. This is the first Ive heard of it and I think I pay attention to things like that more than most.

(2,739 posts)Barr made a number of statements about the legitimacy of the election before he resigned, and denied Trump's heavy pressure to claim there was. That led, I feel sure, to his deciding to resign.
But boy this is self-serving, trying to redeem himself in the court of public opinion. It won't be so easy. He did such damage to the country and to the DOJ. He's got a lot of moral culpability for the advancement of fascism in America.

(108,031 posts)Then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) privately urged former Attorney General William Barr to refute unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election, in part because he thought it would ensure GOP victories in two Georgia Senate runoff elections.
McConnell had not publicly criticized former President Trump's claims of fraud, in part because he believed it would enrage Trump to the point that he would sabotage the two Georgia runoffs.
But the Kentucky Republican had been telling Barr privately since mid-November that Trump's claims were damaging to the party and to the country, according to an excerpt of the upcoming book "Betrayal" by ABC News chief Washington correspondent Jonathan Karl published in The Atlantic on Sunday.
Barr and McConnell both confirmed the account to Karl.

(111,273 posts)He wanted Dumdum to be the defacto dictator of this country, but even he had some limits. I know a lot of people will disagree with that, but Barr gives the impression of not having slept and cheated his way through law school. He just looked at the information and came up with mostly wrong conclusions. He did manage to stay close enough to the edge that "overzealous" DOJ lawyers will be under the bus but he will not.
