New England Is Under A Hurricane Watch For The First Time In Years
Source: npr
The National Hurricane Center has issued a rare hurricane watch for parts of New England, warning that Tropical Storm Henri will likely develop into a hurricane before making landfall on the northeastern U.S. coast this weekend.
The hurricane watch was issued early Friday, covering a large portion of Long Island and areas from New Haven, Conn., to Sagamore Beach, Mass., the National Hurricane Center said. Resort islands such as Block Island, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket are also in the watch zone.
In addition to strong winds and heavy rain, forecasters are warning of a storm surge that could inundate land with 3 to 5 feet of water.
"Confidence is high that the event will occur Sunday into Monday," the National Weather Service office in Boston said in a briefing early Friday. It added that damaging winds were especially possible east of Henri's track, while rains could cause flooding to the west of the storm's path./snip

(67,111 posts)At least with hurricanes you can track them coming and hopefully prepare as best you can.

(14,764 posts)We do get them occasionally. Nothing like down south though (usually).

(13,893 posts)storms this time of year are dangerous because the trees are still in full leaf. The winds don't have to be that high to take them down.

(67,782 posts)...they're saying the worst of it is going east toward Greenland. We'll get rain and some wind on Sunday in western New England.
But things can change in two days.

They're predicting a minimal hurricane degrading rapidly to a tropical storm.
The whole south coast will be covered will millions of dollars in yachts piled up against bridges because their owners couldn't be bothered to rig them for the storm. Yes, I used to live there.

We live about 2 miles from the river. The only danger of flooding is right along shore, but I'm always worried about wind.

(50,278 posts)It should be much weaker by then, but you never know what you're going to get with these storms in our area. It could be a Hurricane Irene which did devastating damage or Hurricane Gloria which ended up being a joke. In any case, we've got the generator ready to go.

(129,108 posts)with more runs pushing it further towards NYC, to the point where we are watching it here in Philly metro for possible rain impacts (already have wet antecedent conditions).

(118,696 posts)hurt really bad from debris flying. One EMT was killed when a tree fell on his ambulance. Stay inside. I was going for a walk 1 hour before on the waterfront because Juan was supposed to hit landfall an hour south of Halifax. The rain started to hurt my face as it fell. I went home quickly. Hfx got a direct hit.
New Haven
(1,059 posts)and now the quote from the article =="The hurricane watch was issued early Friday, covering a large portion of Long Island and areas from New Haven, Conn., to Sagamore Beach, Mass., the National Hurricane Center said. Resort islands"---couple this with my reservations for tent camping on Long Island Sound starting Monday---for 13 nights ------ have I cancelled plans ----NO---not a bit----but our Governor is usually pretty quick to close the state parks with these events----

(63,912 posts)I was expecting everyone would be there buying milk and bread, the usual staples nobody really buys at times like these. But NO BANANAS!
Now that's just bad.
