Breaking: Herschel Walker is running for U.S. Senate in Georgia
Source: Atlanta Journal constitution
Former University of Georgia football star Herschel Walker launched a campaign Tuesday for the U.S. Senate, bringing both his celebrity and his untested political background to one of the premier national contests on the 2022 ballot.
Walker becomes the most prominent Republican to line up against Democratic U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock in next years contest, ending intense speculation that hell move from his home in Texas to Georgia to run for the office.
Walker didnt immediately comment, though he filed paperwork Tuesday with the Federal Election Commission establishing his candidacy and recently registered to vote in Georgia. A formal announcement is expected within days

(1,964 posts)While he has the Cowboys connection there, I would have guessed he had been living in Georgia.
I hope Warnock can beat him soundly but seeing how a dope like Tommy Tuberville got elected, I'm a little worried.
Walker's college feats may be decades old but he is certainly still remembered as one of the all-time great NCAA running backs.

(53,786 posts)Running for the Senate in Georgia makes him a carpetbabber.
He was good as a college running back but didn't have the cutting ability for the pros, which is why Jimmie Johnson engineered that seven-player trade and draft picks for him with Minnesota and San Diego.
It worked best for the Cowboys as they were able to get their fabled tripletsMichael Irvin, Emmett Smith and Troy Aikman who took them to 3 Super Bowl wins in the 90s

(1,964 posts)This thread got me reading about Walker's career and what led up to that trade. I remember the Vikings having a strong 1987 playoff season, beating the Saints and 49ers convincingly on the road. Their top running back was Darrin Nelson who ended up in a contract dispute with Minnesota in 1989. So, the Vikings were looking to add a top running back to go with their passing game which featured All-Pro Anthony Carter. At the time, getting Walker looked like a good thing for the Vikings.
What really helped Dallas was those high draft picks.

(1,964 posts)Had he stayed at Georgia for his senior year, he probably would have had over 2,000 yards rushing and maybe another Heisman trophy. And he would have broken Dorsett's career NCAA rushing record.

(265 posts)The GOP once again, cynically sets up another Black man to run against other Black man.
They think that Herschel Walker's fame as a former NFL player will somehow, persuade the Black
electorate to vote for him at the same time appeal to the conservative whites in the district. Not gonna happen.
I'm not saying Warnock is completely safe, but when you listen to some of Herschel Walker's views, it's not going to
go well with the Black electorate. And besides, it's been what 30 years since he played in the NFL and need I remind you
he's considered (unfairly, in my opinion) part of one of the worst trades in NFL history.
The cynicism of the GOP knows no bounds.

(989 posts)It's those "glory" days at the University of Georgia. Nobody in Georgia will ever forget Herschel, the 1981 Sugar Bowl, and the Heisman trophy. Georgians are UGA football crazy.

(42,862 posts)... Walker doesn't seem to be very bright. Too many concussions? He keeps repeating the same "talking points" and it sounds very rehearsed... but it's like his record-needle is stuck in the same groove. Nothing but stump speech talking points but nothing substantive. He can barely string-together a cohesive sentence without repeating himself.
And his son, Christian... I have no words. Totally brainwashed by his parents (and RW tv/radio) he also can't explain WHY he holds his viewpoints... all he can do is repeat them. He's loud and proud and sassy on TickTock, but when he talks to someone who "brings the receipts" that kid shuts his mouth and stops popping his fingers and bobbing his head... oh-krrrrrr!
He thinks he's all that and a bag of chips... he ain't.

The wife of ex-NFLer Herschel Walker is under fire for allegedly committing voter fraud during the presidential election last year.
Julie Blanchard reportedly cast an absentee ballot in Georgia while living in Texas, reported the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The illegal vote will no doubt impact Walkers political ambitions should he enter the Georgia senate race in 2022.
Walker, 59, was encouraged by his longtime friend Donald Trump to enter the race. The former athlete turned businessman previously called for prosecutions of voter fraud. Walker also promoted the unfounded claim that Trump lost the presidential election to Joe Biden due to election fraud.

Based on the clips of Walker that I've seen, Warnock will wipe the floor with him.
