Ed Asner, Emmy-Winning 'Lou Grant' Star, Dies at 91
Source: Variety
Seven-time Emmy-winning actor Ed Asner, who starred as Lou Grant on both sitcom "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and hourlong drama "Lou Grant" before a late-career rejuvenation through his poignant voicework in 2009 animated film "Up," has died. He was 91.
His publicist confirmed the news to Variety, writing that he died on Sunday surrounded by family. Asner's official Twitter account posted a message from his family, saying "Goodnight dad. We love you."
Asner had worked for many years as a character actor in series television and movies before hitting paydirt and stardom as the tough-talking TV newsroom head Lou Grant on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," which brought him three supporting actor Emmys.
When the sitcom called it quits, he returned as the same character in a harder-hitting hourlong series, which earned him two leading actor Emmys and a total of five noms. The actor picked up two additional Emmys for his work on the miniseries "Rich Man, Poor Man" and "Roots," and won a total of seven.More recently he appeared on "Grace & Frankie," "Cobra Kai" and provided voices for "American Dad!"

(26,291 posts)He was in Flint, performing in 'Born Yesterday' with Karen Valentine and Lyle Waggoner. During the 'Star Theater' series in Flint, the stars would hang around in the lobby for a meet and greet. He was as sweet and kind as could be. Just a lovely, lovely man.

(28,845 posts)Dear Ed. Already miss you. So much like my Dad.
Your acting and your politics.
Ive heard you described as the last real Democrat. How did you earn that title and can you talk about how God Help Us! relates to the current political scene?
Asner: I was born in 1929, so it was good year to be christened a Democrat. I come from Kansas City, Kansas, so we were vastly outnumbered. You had to learn to fight dirty and fight hard. I felt like the last living Democrat. A real Democrat is a euphemism for socialist. I like it. I think Americans were shucked into equating socialism with communism. People have been placed badly by that equation. Theyve screwed themselves. Until they get over that prejudice, our social progress will be slow.

(99,718 posts)He was in Omaha for a performance of "The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial" with a cast starring Edward Asner and Mike Farrell.
He autographed a photo from John Wayne's "El Dorado". He also signed a photo from "The Gathering".
He spilled his drink, but didn't get upset.
Very nice guy.

The scene I think that did it was the one where there was no dialog at all...
I have the DVD but watching the scene again is just heart-breaking but real.

(14,934 posts)As an old fashioned Paste Up and Mechanicals worker for a bunch of years - you paste up type, ads, copies of photos for placement (the printer will set up the real converted ones) on a big cardstock board with photo-blue (a cyan color a B&W camera doesn't see) guidelines.
When articles end up being too long - you "wield" by the editor's instructions; a very sharp X-acto knife cut out (sometimes re-paste) lines, words, single letters, 😂 single commas, periods, etc. Omg!
Well - there's an episode where the workers who do this go on strike. Lou, the other management has to go and do this!
At one point either Ed or Mason Adams says,
"has anyone seen my 'e'?".
I'm 😂 nearly falling off my chair because that's on a rare occasion little bits could "fly off" somewhere as you finish cutting, or get stuck on your hand, arm, sleeve, etc!
