Majority favors US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan: poll

Source: The Hill

A majority of Americans support pulling troops out of Afghanistan and ending America's longest war, according to a new poll released this week.

A study from Pew Research Center, conducted prior to the last troop leaving Afghanistan this week, found 54 percent of U.S. adults said the decision to withdraw troops from the country was the right one, while 42 percent said they think it was the wrong move.

The survey also found a solid 69 percent of the American public feels the United States mostly failed in achieving its goals in Afghanistan, with only 26 percent saying President Biden's administration has done an excellent or good job in handling the crisis.

On Tuesday, in a defiant and assertive speech, Biden slammed critics of his decision to pull out of the war-torn nation, saying it was time to end America's longest war.

Their propaganda machine will touch all the bases, push all the buttons, to get those approval numbers down.

Biden was not defying the will of the people. He may have defied the will of the war-hungry media, but his duty is to serve the public's interests.

And the 74% who disapproved of the handling of our pullout can be blamed on the media's over-the-top negative coverage that failed to provide enough historical context for its viewers. Not a single one of the 74% could have offered up a better strategy.

5. People like the goal of leaving, but the how of leaving was not liked

Understandable given the Taliban takeover and ISIS-K attack on the airport. It was not a worst case scenario (think hostages), BUT it was a bad scenario nevertheless and the polls just reflect that. It really came down to a large miscalculation about how quickly the Taliban would take Kabul and the other large cities.

President Biden and his team are expert in foreign policy and he has a professional US military advising him. The rapid advance in the weeks leading up to the fall of Kabul must have seriously caught everyone off-guard. There are statements from as late as July suggesting that perhaps the Afghan government might fall within 6 months (but not 1 month).

and that sent a clear signal to the Taliban, and the Afghan army, who he believed was more important to the withdrawal.

I'd love to see just one media personality acknowledge that all Biden did was take the can that got kicked to him, pick it up and throw it away.

If you really think getting over 100,000 people out before the deadline, in the teeth of Taliban occupation, was a disaster, can you imagine what this would have looked like if the orange headed buffoon had been in charge of it?

9. When did the majority last NOT favor US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan?

The evacuation did not go well, to say the least, but to me it made it 100% clear that leaving ASAP was the right choice. Hopefully Joe's pledge to stop nation building will really take effect this time.
