AP sources: Intel shows extremists to attend Capitol rally
Source: AP
WASHINGTON (AP) Far right extremist groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers are planning to attend a rally later this month at the U.S. Capitol that is designed to demand justice for the hundreds of people who have been charged in connection with Januarys insurrection, according to three people familiar with intelligence gathered by federal officials.
As a result, U.S. Capitol Police have been discussing in recent weeks whether the large perimeter fence that was erected outside the Capitol after Januarys riot will need to be put back up, the people said.
The officials have been discussing security plans that involve reconstructing the fence as well as another plan that does not involve a fence, the people said. They were not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
The planned Sept. 18 rally at the Capitol comes as a jittery Washington has seen a series of troubling one-off incidents including, most recently, a man who parked a pickup truck near the Library of Congress and said he had a bomb and detonator. Among the most concerning events: A series of unexploded pipe bombs placed around the U.S. Capitol ahead of the Jan. 6 insurrection remain unexplained and no suspect has been charged.

That is, imo, the goal of this, to terrorize.
Live ammo for the Guard this time.

(16,519 posts)Joe's not stupid. He saw what happened on January 6, just like the rest of us did and is not going to let anything get out of hand on his watch.
Being potus, he knows all about these miscreants, much more than any of us do. Whatever they want to try, he'll make sure Washington is ready for it.

(2,212 posts)and start going after these extremist terrorist groups enmasse.
Use their own plan against them this time. Difference is we would be justified because we are trying to preserve the government, not trying to overthrow it.

(50,562 posts)Upgrade all of them to federal felony charges. Try them. Convict them. Strip them of their gun and voting rights. And throw them in one prison with no non-insurrectionist prisoners in it, so they dont teach Trumpism to others.
Thats probably not the justice they want and its certainly not what they deserve, but I dont think theyll let us execute them with their own guns and bury them in a mass grave with a prison exercise yard built on top of it.

I know that we can be monitored from our cell phones, which I leave the GPS off.
They can still triangulate from cell tower pings.

(3,503 posts)I predict turnout will be quite disappointing for the protesters and their M$M hypers (hoping for violence to boost their ratings). Sorry but I'm not going to get worked up over a bunch of yahoos and military wannabes who in the end are largely dead-enders.
We need to start focusing on GOTV. Next year is pivotal. The issues we care about have to be communicated and the folks who showed up in 2020 to put a halt to this nonsense need to make a habit of showing up in ALL fall elections (and primaries for that matter since Repubs push constitutional amendments during primaries because they know their faction votes regularly). I can't get too worked up tying to "protect" other folks who don't bother showing up (or mail in their ballot) on election day.

(38,580 posts)So there shouldn't be and Congressmen or Senators in the building. That's the first place to start.
To protect the building itself, a fence is appropriate as well as the U.S. military.
Also, any permit granted for a rally should be limited to the rally location. No parade, and no gatherings of 5 or more people within a certain distance of any government building.

And how about arming the Capitol Police with bear spray, too? What's good for the goose-steppers is good for those protecting democracy from the goose-steppers.

(2,022 posts)They will take it as a sign of their power and how much the government fears them. And they will be right in a way.
I don't think the fence is necessary -- the problem at the Capital is that no-one was prepared.
