Democrats promote Cheney to vice chairwoman of Jan. 6 panel
Source: AP news
House Democrats have promoted Republican Rep. Liz Cheney to vice chairwoman of a committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection, placing her in a leadership spot on the panel as some members of the GOP caucus are threatening to oust her for participating.
Cheney, a fierce critic of former President Donald Trump, has remained defiant amid the criticism from her own party, insisting that Congress must probe the Capitol attack, in which hundreds of Trumps supporters violently pushed past police, broke into the building and interrupted the certification of Joe Bidens presidential election victory.
Cheneys appointment as vice chairwoman comes amid an effort by some Republicans to oust Cheney and Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois from the GOP conference because they accepted their appointments to the panel from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. A draft letter by Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs to Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy obtained by The Associated Press calls Cheney and Kinzinger two spies for the Democrats whom Republicans cannot trust to attend their private meetings.
Every member of this committee is dedicated to conducting a non-partisan, professional, and thorough investigation of all the relevant facts regarding January 6th and the threat to our Constitution we faced that day, Cheney said in the statement. I have accepted the position of Vice Chair of the committee to assure that we achieve that goal.

(43,057 posts)I hope despite the differences in ideologies that mutual respect results from this committee. Communication and disagreement do not always mean political war. Or at least they didn't pre-2000, 1994, or 1980, depends on the starting point you choose.

(18,619 posts)A very strategically placed republican ends the accusation that it's a partisan "witch hunt".
The GOP can't argue that there are only two or three real republicans in the whole country suited for the position, though they may go on Hannity to say it.

(7,805 posts)they are still conservative republicans...both voted 90% of the time with Trump and against his first impeachment...at this particular moment in time they hate Trump more than they hate the Dems..ok we'll take it, however, unless they're willing to leave the Republican Party, go independent, and caucus with the Dems let's not rush to sainthood...

(42,862 posts)Are you seriously suggesting that Cheney doesn't deserve the role? Do you believe that elevating her to Vice-Chair is something that harms or tarnish the committee? Does it harm other Democrats?
Thanks in advance.

I'm certainly glad that the committee leadership and its members are able to look at things with a much more mature, thoughtful, measured and rational approach. I trust the committee chairman. So should you. He knows what he's doing.
As the committee has met privately, Cheney has worked closely with Democrats in determining the direction of the probe. The committees chairman, Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson, said in the statement announcing Cheneys appointment that Democrats are fortunate to have a partner of such strength and courage and that Cheneys insights have shaped the early work of the panel.
Cheney has demonstrated again and again her commitment to getting answers about January 6th, ensuring accountability, and doing whatever it takes to protect democracy for the American people, Thompson said.

(67,782 posts)... feels can do the job and work well with the rest of the committee "deserves" the position. It's not a question of being deserving, it's a question of getting the work of the committee done.

(42,862 posts)... it's not about Cheney. It's about being able to successfully meet the committee's objectives. I'm glad to see that the chairman doesn't live in a binary world where things can only be viewed as "black/white" or "good/evil".

(42,862 posts)There are none so blind as those who will not see. You cannot make someone pay attention to something that he or she does not want to notice, or that doesn't comport with a binary worldview that's twisted and distorted with irrational hatred. (People like that are everywhere on Twitter and elsewhere.)

(792 posts)She's on the verge of being tossed out of her party and is only using us out of convenience.
I know she hates Trump and that helps but she also hates us so how can you know what her real motivation is? What if she gets up there and flips and tries to regain her MAGA bonifides?
I don't have any names to throw out there, but the kind of person I'd imagine we'd want is a Republican whose seat is extremely safe and as a result of that safety can prioritize our government over their own career.

(9,944 posts)... I approve. Her political views are awful, but this committee is not about them... it makes the committee and Democrats look good, especially to Independents. Liz is also valuable as someone who knows the criminals and may have some leads.
