The Latest: Ida remnants brings 'historic' flooding to PA

PHILADELPHIA Record flooding along the Schuylkill River in Pennsylvania inundated homes and commercial buildings, swamped highways, submerged cars and disrupted rail service in the Philadelphia area.
Valerie Arkoosh, chairperson of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, said three people died in suburban Montgomery County and a tree fell into a womans house in Upper Dublin, killing her. Two other people drowned, one in a home and the other in a car.
In a tweet, city officials predicted historic flooding on Thursday as river levels continue to rise. The riverside community of Manayunk remained largely under water.
Emergency workers in the county completed more than 450 water rescues. That is three times the previous record. Rescue efforts were continuing throughout the morning. The National Weather Service was in the area to investigate reports that a tornado touched down.

This was the most rain I ever saw in 65 years. Major damage all over the area.

(152,075 posts)which is right on the Kelly Drive next to the Schuylkill River near the Falls Bridge.
As a point of reference (using an unrelated map) - that gas station is right near the Falls Bridge on the corner of the little street called "John B. Kelly Dr." (the "Kelly" of "Grace Kelly" fame - her father), if you kept straight on the Falls Bridge towards Ridge Ave. (it's the little yellow squared building).
That area floods all the time. That spot is raised a bit higher than the main Kelley Drive and as you cross Ridge and head up any of those other streets beyond, you go up some steep hills as they are part of the "gorge" that the river formed over the millennia.
ETA, the local NWS in Mt. Holly confirmed 7 tornadoes in the Philly metro area yesterday. They are still evaluating a few for what EF scale they were.

(16,758 posts)Ida did not cause nearly as much damage as Agnes did here. In Pittsburgh, neither the Point nor the Riverwalk outside PNC Park flooded.
