California gubernatorial candidate Larry Elder (R) on Friday pledged to replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) with a Republican if he wins the Golden State's recall election.
They're afraid I'm going to replace her with a Republican, which I most certainly would do and that would be an earthquake in Washington, D.C., Elder said on the "Mark Levin Show."
The conservative radio host claims Feinstein has not been seen in weeks and is in an even worst mental condition than Joe Biden.
Feinstein, 88, said earlier this year she does not plan to step down from her seat and wants to finish her current term, which ends in 2025.

Not that I'm a huge fan of Feinstein, but Elder is an ignorant idiot here.

(1,753 posts)The reprehensible right must think that after Elder is elected, Feinstein will be forced to resign due to health reasons.
If a senator resigns or dies in office, his/her replacement is appointed by the governor.

(2,031 posts)To special election. That would be more democratic then pushing an elected senator to retire, so our preferred individual selects their replacement.

(205,238 posts)Or if a senator moves on to another position. When my Senator, Hillary Clinton, was appointed as Secretary of State by President Obama, it was up to the governor to appoint her replacement.

Mr.Bill
(24,282 posts)of the 25% of the state that are registered republicans. He is killing any chance the republicans had of removing Newsom. He's the best GOTV tool the Democrats have. Having a radio talk show host as their front runner shows you how deep the rebublican bench is in California. Trump showed it on a national level and continues to do so. All the republican elected officials in the USA and their leader is a developmentally disabled five year old child. (I'm being generous here, his niece who is a psychologist and has studied him for decades says his development was arrested at age two and a half)

It could backfire on the freak, because this is solidifying what the Newsom campaign is saying about the nut case.

(51,585 posts)If he thinks he can win over Dems by advertising on MSNBC he just may be even more stupid than I thought, which is considerable. If he wants to throw his hard earned GQP ( ) money at them I say, "Go for it, dude".

(8,911 posts)He thinks Senators are chosen by a Governor.
Even when Senators weren't voted on, it was the legislature that chose the Senators, not the governor.
This idiot needs to take civics listen, if he knows what that is.
Retrograde
(10,134 posts)well, maybe not quite half. If a senator resigns or dies, the governor does appoint a replacement to fill out the term. For example, when Harris resigned her senate seat to be vice president, Newsom appointed Padilla to replace her (I take some pride in the fact that I emailed him recommending Padilla) He can not, however, remove a sitting senator, no matter what an idiot that senator is (e.g., Rand Paul) or how elderly or sick. Nor can people in federal elected positions be recalled.
aggiesal
(8,911 posts)that he would replace Feinstein just because.
Makes him sound and look like an idiot.
Mr.Bill
(24,282 posts)the Legislature can pass a law requiring him to appoint a Senator of the same party as the one who has left office. Several states have this law. And the Democratic supermajority in both houses will prevent him from being able to veto it.

What should happen is the recall process needs to be changed so the alt Governor takes over like in NY and other states

(2,771 posts)Control of the Senate has long been considered the end game of this recall. I havent heard any other Republican state plainly prior to this, though. Yes, Sen. Feinstein would have to step down or die, but Republicans think theres a great enough chance of that happening that theyve pushed this recall. God, I hope California voters GOTV and dash the hopes of these assholes.

(24,695 posts)This article details how vacancies are filled when they occur in the United States Senate. In 37 states, vacancies are temporarily filled by gubernatorial appointment. A special election is then held coinciding with the next regularly scheduled election to replace the appointee. In the remaining 13 states, a special election is required within a certain time frame to fill the vacancy. Of those 13 states, eight allow for an interim gubernatorial appointment.

(15,390 posts)Of course he'd replace her with a Republican, just like I'd expect a Democratic governor to replace a Republican Senator with a Democrat. With that being said, say no to the recall.
