U.S. hits 40 million Covid cases as Delta variant spreads
Source: NBC News
The United States logged 40 million Covid-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, as the fourth wave brought on by the delta variant continues to spread throughout the country.
The country has recorded 40,000,070 cases and 651,690 deaths, according to the latest NBC News tally. On Sunday, the U.S. recorded 35,355 news cases and 279 deaths.
The milestone comes as almost more than 207 million people have received their first dose and more than 175 million people have been fully vaccinated.
There has been a slow uptick in vaccination rates since July, but still no state or territory has passed the 70 percent fully vaccinated threshold among its population, and the country is nowhere close to its peak in April of more than 3 million people getting a shot each day.

(53,743 posts)Delta is not going to stop spreading any time soon.
And then there are idiot governors stopping masking and vaccines, and some universities even not requiring vaccines.
We're in crazy time, folks. Be careful out there.

(45,380 posts)by targeting people who are unvaccinated and avoid social distancing or masks. So they deliberately target those brave patriots who resist socialism, which is diabolical.
Yes, I know it's #NotOnlyRedStates on DU and on the freeper side it's #NotAllRedStates.
It's just that Covid Act Now uses the color red for states hit hardest.

(11,085 posts)175 million fully vaccinated. 331 million people (2020 census says). That's about 53%. Means we need another 37% immune to reach herd immunity. 331 million * .37 = 122.5 million. Roughly. Subtract 40 million (12.1%). Leaves 82.5 million more need to catch the disease, or get vaccinated.
But wait! There's more! The vaccines are only 95% effective. And some people who catch Covid can catch it a second time. Not everybody develops permanent immunity. And partly because of that, some of those 40 million who had Covid went and got the vaccination as well. And children under 12 aren't eligible for vaccination yet (about 15% of population).
Assuming that the people who took one dose will definitely get the second dose (and third if necessary), that gives 207 / 331 = 62.5% * 95% = 59.4% immunity. We still need 30.4% to reach the threshold. Just about 100 million. Subtract 40, leaves 60.
So, 60 million more need to catch the disease (maybe more). WE'RE NOT EVEN (insert many swear words here) HALFWAY!
