Union workers propel Newsom in waning days of recall campaign

By Dan Merica and Kyung Lah,
Los Angeles (CNN)It was approaching a sweltering 100 degrees when California Gov. Gavin Newsom jumped into the back of a flatbed truck to thank dozens of laborers for their work to keep him in office.
"I know what you are thinking," said Newsom in shirtsleeves and a tie. "He better be short, it is 100 degrees out here."
Labor has been central to Newsom's effort to keep his job, and if he is able to stave off a Republican-backed recall effort on September 14, he could have the scores of labor unions backing him to thank for it. The union workers in California have not only become Newsom's base because of their ties to labor, but because Newsom is also benefiting from deep support among voters of color -- many of whom made up the audience for the governor's speech on Sunday.
"Your family is here in the federation," Ron Herrera, head of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, said to Newsom, as union workers from across the county picked through barbeque provided by the Sheet Metal Local 105.

(43,064 posts)Hard to imagine him being replaced. California needs to change its recall petition and election laws. Recall by insignificant minority is not a model for democracy, it's a model for fascism and extremism installed to suit financial interests with poorly qualified candidates - front men.

(9,696 posts)If Newsom were to face off any of the candidates on the ballot he'd win by a significant margin. Most of the names on the recall ballot would not evn be able to qualify for a primary.
Also, the number of names needed on the recall petition is lower by half of what other staates require and doesn't make any party requirements.

(2,031 posts)A majority has to vote to recall, not a minority.

(9,696 posts)reflect the majority which makes the process very undemocratic. If he were to be recalled the only democratic option would be to have the lt gov take over until an actual election could be held.
Recall in the state of California has no requirement of criminality or corruption, which further reflects how anti-democratic this process is. The recall process needs to be changed to make it truly reflective of the majoritys wshes.

(43,064 posts)and a weak tally for the replacement if there were one.
It's become a partisan process by committed activists to catch the majority of California voters sleeping. I don't see the wisdom in flipping control of government to weakly popular opposition.

(6,008 posts)because the republicans will keep trying.
If the repubicans go for another bite at the apple later on, the democrats should also not put all their eggs in one basket. For example, they could have put the Lt. Governor on the recall ballot, with the explicit promise if they won, with fewer votes than no votes, that they would appoint the former governor as Lt. Governor, and then resign to be reappointed as Lt. Governor.
If the republicans are going to rules lawyer within the letter of the law, then we should be prepared to as well.

(6,445 posts)of eligible voters actually vote, and Newsome gets booted by a slim margin... that's roughly 26% of eligible voters that created the outcome. I know, i know... it's just the way the system works. But in this scenario (all too common btw) a majority DID NOT vote in the winner (or oust). Was it ever thus? Would compulsory voting be a good thing? Maybe a tax credit for voting?
OneCrazyDiamond
(2,031 posts)Technically Gov Newsom won with 7.7 million votes out of 19.6 million registered voters. Voting should be compulsory like jury duty, and paying taxes.

(35,622 posts)Newsom might be a good governor, but hed be a helluva lot better if he didnt have to be bothered with tiresome, time-consuming tactics that force him to spend his time protecting his job. Thanks, republicans 🙄
Truly impressive how he got people to turn out in that heat. I liked the paragraph in the article that tells how unions in California bring together all ethnic backgrounds, ages, races,
Unions are much stronger on the coasts than in the interior of the country.

(2,541 posts)He has done a really good job as Governor. To hear 💩heads like Scott baio who was campaigning for elder yesterday call Cali a 💩state because of Newsom is really infuriating. Listening to Elder is also teeth gnashing. Both of them just go on a diatribe of over the top made up lies and they get no push back.
The GOP on the state & local level has pretty much morphed into a carbon copy of the GOP on the Federal level. Nothing but lies. The MSM needs to step up their game and stop letting the lies be told with out any critical push back. Watching Meet the Press the other day was sad and it has to stop or we will not survive.
