Workers remove Richmond's iconic statue of Robert E. Lee

Source: Washington Post

RICHMOND — Workers removed the imposing statue of Robert E. Lee that has embodied this city’s mythology as the former capital of the Confederacy, affixing hardware Wednesday morning that will soon bring the bronze icon to the ground after 131 years of towering over rooftops.

By a few minutes after 8 a.m., workers had pulled a strap around one leg of the horse and were attaching a second. More than 200 people — some carrying Black Lives Matter flags — held up cellphone and cameras as workers prepared to move it. By 8:20 a.m., Gov. Ralph Northam (D) had arrived at the scene and stood watching preparations from a traffic median.

Security was tight, as state and local law enforcement are closing streets for several blocks around the Lee traffic circle on Monument Avenue, a Parisian-style boulevard of century-old homes. Citing both security and safety — the statue looms 60 feet above the ground — authorities have restricted public access to a small area across the street and urged people to watch the action online.

But a boisterous crowd still managed to assemble to see the demise of a symbol that had endured for generations. The unauthorized crowd of onlookers in front of a nearby apartment building swelled as people discovered a route through and alleyway behind the building. “This is huge,” said Lamonte Rigmaden, who drive an hour from Stafford to witness the removal. The 47-year-old Army combat veteran wore a shirt emblazoned with photos of George Floyd and other unarmed Black people killed by police. “The stain of white supremacy is all over this monument.”

and that was over 35 years ago. I guess I was a little surprised at how rural it was all around it but then that shouldn't have been surprising.

Maybe add a US flag of the period. Carve the Union General's names above their heads.

Buffalo Soldiers originally were members of the 10th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army, formed on September 21, 1866, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. This nickname was given to the Colored Cavalry [1] by Native American tribes who fought in the Indian Wars. The term eventually became synonymous with all of the African-American regiments formed in 1866:

9th Cavalry Regiment
10th Cavalry Regiment
24th Infantry Regiment
25th Infantry Regiment
Second 38th Infantry Regiment

Robert E. Lee statue is removed in Richmond, ex-capital of Confederacy, after months of protests and legal resistance

So someone also had an issue with that original.

I think in the more "modern" sense, an "icon" can also be considered like an "avatar" or "representation of something". So with that meaning, it might be something "emblematic of" or "well known in" or "ubiquitously displayed during" the period in which it existed.

In a strictly definition sense, it's correct. I meant its usage, and, in my experience, that has always (as far as I can remember) had a positive connotation.
