Larry Elder cuts short Venice homeless encampment tour after hostile reception

Source: Los Angeles Times

Larry Elder’s scheduled tour of homeless encampments in Venice ended shortly after it began Wednesday morning, with the leading Republican in the gubernatorial recall race hastily exiting in a Suburban after being angrily confronted by a group of homeless people and advocates.

Elder — who had arrived in his new “Recall Express” campaign bus shortly after casting his ballot at a voting center across town — spent roughly 12 minutes in the neighborhood, with his departure hastened by what appeared to be an egg thrown in his direction.

“It kind of glanced his head,” an Elder campaign staffer said of the object.

A woman in a gorilla mask riding a bicycle threw the small white object past Elder’s head, as seen in a video posted on Twitter by Spectrum News reporter Kate Cagle. Moments later, the woman took a swing at a man who appeared to be part of Elder's team. The man was hit by at least one other heckler just before Elder was escorted into the Suburban.

The issue of homelessness is a complex one and I don't condone violence. On the other hand if you try to exploit other people's misfortune you're not likely to get a kind reception.

She seems like she's homeless rather than an activist - given the context, I can't say that's a hate crime or racist. Lots of hostility on display.

I somewhat doubt she was an art protester lost on her way to the Met.

I think if I was homeless and knew what this Elder guy stood for, to be used as a prop for this guys political campaign might be a bridge too far!

They are the very people he would destroy their encampments and cast them into the street, if not jail.

Elder must know by now he's losing...eggs whizzing by your head is not a good sign.

He was there to point at it and blame Newsom.

Billionaires--are you listening???

A progressive friend of mine can do this (if in bronze) in his nearby casting factory.

Let's make it so. Message me and we will work on concept and details!

Thanks.

…voting isn’t a high priority. And likely, people like Elder are working to make it impossible for them to vote.

Asking the homeless for their vote shows how stupid this ex-TV judge is.

helped me out with a chain problem I was having on a rented bike. This was pre-Covid.
None of the tourists around offered to help, but the homeless were very kind. They refused any offer of money, but I bought sandwiches for lunch and we talked for a long time. The mention of political issues made it quite obvious they were not repubes. They may be homeless, but they have pride and don't want to be used as fodder for politicians.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think it's beyond a possibility, this needs to be investigated.
