A Biden administration plan to lower prescription-drug prices offers the first detailed road map of administrative actions the White House would support in addition to legislation aimed at driving down costs.
The plan, to be released Thursday, backs legislation from congressional Democrats, including a push to empower the federal government to negotiate for drug prices in Medicare and pass those lower costs along to the private sector. The road map goes further, however, by outlining administrative actions by agencies and departments that could come in concert with possible legislative changes.

(38,958 posts)If they would include eliminating all advertising for prescription drugs I bet the costs would drop like a rock. Those endless and mind numbing ads. On TV cannot be cheap nor is the commercial time slot.
Advertising prescription drugs should never have been allowed, but that ship has sailed. I wish President Biden would lead a push to stop them,

Actually, I'd rather they lower the price of prescription insurance also. I resent the fact that if you are on Medicare you are pretty much forced to purchase prescription drug insurance even if you don't take any drugs.

(4,619 posts)Jeesh.
It is never a topic on the major news networks because prescription drug advertising is their cash cow. They might be good reporters, but they are also drug dealers.

(70,103 posts)before they advertised that stuff, the only way to get that info was from a doc.
i have good docs, but they didnt suggest that i try lyrica. i saw it on tv.
made a big difference to me and to other people.
they are a way around the gate keepers, and that a GOOD thing.
i'm fine w limits on spending. but...

(38,958 posts)I prefer to get my information on medication from a professional rather than a slickly made television advertisement.
mopinko
(70,103 posts)not everyone has a doc.
also- male. ask any woman w a chronic illness if her doc is her best source of info.
then duck.

(38,958 posts)and will follow his advice any day over that of a television advertisement. If that works for you, have at it. Seems silly to me.
BTW, my wife follows the advice of her doctor(s) and even with a chronic illness seems to trust them over what is on cable noise.
mopinko
(70,103 posts)it's not about taking a drug that i saw on teevee. cant do that w/o a doc.
it's about knowing that it's out there so i can ask the doc about it.
you are lucky, and your wife is amazingly lucky.
i have multiple autoimmune diseases, but i was the one who had to figure that out 1st, and get a doc to confirm. that's the story for most women w ai.
docs arent gods, and keeping info stovepiped through them is just bullshit.
people die that way.
Sherman A1
(38,958 posts)however, you seem to be.
Self diagnose all you want. If it works for you......

(70,103 posts)my ideas arent anything w/o a doc. i have lots of docs. (part of the prob- they dont talk to each other. just hand patients off to specialists and forget about it.)
but i take an active part in my care, and everyone should.
you cant do that w/o info. admittedly, teevee ads arent the best way to get info out. but til there are better ways, it's important info.
you are deifying a system that doesnt deserve it.

As I said several posts above we must agree to disagree. That is the last word from me to you on this or any other topic. Life is just too short.
Good Day.

(70,103 posts)have a primary who teaches at u of chicago. rheumie, too.
neither of them realized that my copd was not inflammatory, but secretions from my shoghens. i figured it out, and turns out it is easily controlled w a saline mist treatment, instead of the steroids i've been on for years. also have osteopenia, which, yeah, steroids not good.
and i have several conditions that are likely also related, but not of a concern to either of, because i am seeing a specialist.
it's called stovepiping, and it's the biggest factor in medical mystery cases.
i'm in a gap in my ins atm, but i'm planning a 'come to jesus' talk w my rheumie.
all the bs of the last 1 1/2 yrs blew it all up so hard, it was easy to see.
and oh, being a medical mystery gets you a psyche dx.
it aint all white coats and smiles, ppl.
I'm so sorry! Either your PCP isn't spending enough time with you and really LISTENING (which is the case with so many of them) or there's just so much going on with you and he/she can't see the forest for the trees.
I'm glad you're on top of everything and figured it out.
Yes, you have a different set of parameters than most. Do whatever you think is best for you, and keep on chugging.

cleared up the brain fog that i had had in a bad way since getting west nile in '02, but also had most of my life since i got my head bashed in at 6.
lifelong klutz, but not rly any more.
also cleared up a lot of muscle spasms. changed my voice considerably.
actually looking for a new pcp, for sorta obvious reasons. got pretty sick last year and tried figuring this shit out. found out if you rly want to piss off a doctor, tell them what's wrong w you. esp if it should be staring them in the face.
been a patient for over a decade, and liked her. but...
she behaved incredibly unprofessionally, even tho i admit i was being difficult. but i felt like shit.

(4,392 posts)without a Medigap (supplemental) and budget currently too tight, even Medicare-approved (hahaha) private insurer Advantage plan choices seem to suck; daughters are freaking out as do I, but...I do thorough research on supplements, nutrition, exercise, and best science re Covid-19, and hope for the best for us healthwise as possible. I know exactly what you mean about going to the specialists and the shrinks as well; nothing wrong with men's heads though. I've lost enough throughout under the GQP's I've never voted for, including professional diagnosis and treatment folks, but am still grateful because there are many in worse shape, but it's lonely, scary, and far too late to fly solo.

We are one of only TWO countries in the world that allow direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical advertisements. The other is New Zealand, believe it or not.

She took the golden parachute offered to her when her employer was swallowed up by an international conglomerate. I think it added up to over $1 million. They also closed down the factory in West Virginia, putting hundreds of Joe's constituents out of work.
But the Manchins got theirs, so no big deal. Manchin is a hypocrite of the first/worst order.

(4,392 posts)too many anecdotes and legit studies about the necessity to manage and avoid toxic SAD and environmental concerns that screws up one's immune system via the microbiome/leaky gut...obesity, liver, brain, nervous system, hormonal/adrenal - when the immune system doesn't work well, one's energy reserves to keep homeostasis of bodily functions deteriorate leaving one susceptible to chronic and catastrophic disease processes.
That said, it's hard not to dream up CT's evolving from the R&D laboratories, private and under control of DD or funded by rich political Wall Street types that support moranic leadership in government to maintain such wealth, from the lowly NRA types, pathogenic bioweapons, to those who deny climate change, and the physics/materials and cyber labs pretending that AI will give them advantage. The kernels of truth are that no protocols are failsafe when the intentions of the evil heart are involved...or plain human error might explain but is covered up in fear. Human morality, ethics, empathy, compassionate care, civility, kindness, and respect then go right out the window! We're truly on our own...
