Pro-Trump lawyers face $200,000 legal bill for 'frivolous' election case
Source: Reuters
WASHINGTON, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Michigan officials on Wednesday demanded that lawyers who unsuccessfully sued to overturn former President Donald Trump's election defeat in the state pay about $200,000 to reimburse for legal fees and related costs.
U.S. District Judge Linda Parker ruled last month that state and local election officials in Michigan were entitled to reimbursement of their legal fees, but has not yet determined the exact amount. The judge will now review the $200,000 request to determine if it is reasonable.
Most of the $200,000 was requested by the City of Detroit, which spent about $180,000 on a private law firm in the case. The office of Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel asked for about $20,000.
Parker ordered the repayment as part of sanctions against the lawyers who included Sidney Powell, a former campaign lawyer for Trump, and prominent litigator Lin Wood.

(19,200 posts)It's OK if you're a republican.
They just didn't want others filing frivolous lawsuits. Tort reform was for commoners, like us, suing wealthy people. That had to stop immediately.

(301 posts)They did Trump's dirty work but none of his political fund raising is being used to support the people he once called on to defend his honor.

(128,909 posts)like MI, AZ, GA, and here in PA.
There have been judges issuing sanctions - re: MI.
And I just found that PA actually filed for sanctions this past May - https://www.forbes.com/sites/alisondurkee/2021/05/19/pennsylvania-becomes-latest-battleground-state-to-go-after-giuliani-and-election-lawyers-who-peddled-the-big-lie/?sh=1fb9fc501f3b
And at that same link, it says that all of the above-named states have done the same -

Key Background
Pennsylvanias actions come after other battleground states had already moved to take action against attorneys who were part of the unsuccessful legal campaign to overturn the election results, which resulted in more than 60 failed cases. Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers has filed motions for former President Donald Trump and his attorneys and far-right lawyer Sidney Powell to be sanctioned and pay attorneys fees in cases they brought against the election results, and Michigan officials have similarly filed to sanction Powell and have her disbarred. Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs also successfully asked a court to order the Arizona GOP to pay $18,000 in attorneys fees for a post-election lawsuit, and individual Georgia counties have requested nearly $17,000 attorneys fees from Trump and his lawyers. Though the post-election lawsuits have largely been wrapped upone of the last remaining cases, in Antrim County, Michigan, was dismissed TuesdayTrump and his allies have continued to make false claims about the election being stolen, despite there being no credible evidence to back that up.
So I think this one with Michigan happened to be making the news since it had some court movement with their filings.

(38,555 posts)I think the heavy-duty punishment may come from the attorneys losing their licenses. The ruling has been forwarded to the licensing boards of the states where the attorneys are licensed--for review and possible disbarment.
