Capitol Police call for discipline against 6 officers who responded to Jan. 6 riot

The U.S. Capitol Police has recommended disciplinary action against six officers who responded to Jan. 6 Capitol riot, the department announced in a news release Saturday evening.

The violations that were sustained against the six officers included three cases of conduct unbecoming and one case each of failure to comply with directives, improper remarks and improper dissemination of information, the department said.

Separately, a case involving an unnamed Capitol Police official accused of unsatisfactory performance and conduct unbecoming is still pending, according to the department.

Overall, the six cases where disciplinary action was recommended against officers are just a fraction of the total number of internal investigations launched by the department following the storming of the Capitol by a mob of supporters of former President Donald Trump that came the same day the results of the 2020 presidential election were being certified by lawmakers.

1. And this

is how it works. Somehow they can recommend disciplinary action but, just can't figure out what the action should be. We have police officers with a sworn duty to protect the country and they helped the terrorists. You can't make this up. If there was any justice in this country every one of them would still be in jail, waiting on a trip to Gitmo.

5. People have known for years that they're stuck with the worst of us as cops.

The myth of the friendly neighborhood cop-on-the-beat is thoroughly busted. If it wasn't already, summer 2020 did it for many.

But we all just go along thinking that since we're not criminals we're going to get by okay. Still, we know that we're at risk if we're stopped and grilled in that half-angry and manic-paranoid manner they learn in "intimidation 101" at cop college. We force ourselves to bite our tongue not to respond the way we would if they didn't have a badge, often treating them like a strange dog. We don't know if they'll bite but we know they can. The risk grows greater with the darkness our skins.

Sometimes we've excused how cops are as an inescapable byproduct of their environment. Dealing with criminal people makes them less trusting, less trustworthy. But these days, with their pay rate and horrible schedules, you know there's something essentially odd about a personality that intentionally remains a LEO. I often come to the conclusion that a lot of it is simply a marginal intelligence and/or psychology gravitating to a position of very little or no call to accountability: a free ride. That would explain how so many cops, when fired from one venue, are readily hired into another. It's not like the real world of private enterprise where your resume is an important component for success. Oh, and BYW, it's cops who hire cops.

But, you know, most of that could be said about any Republican voting, self proclaimed "conservative". Bad mood this AM. The bastards deferred my Saturday evening PBS to celebrating the anniversary of that which none dare call gross dereliction.

7. None of the disciplinary actions were for aiding in the insurrection

Mostly conduct unbecoming the department and the like. They deserve and will receive disciplinary action. Taking a selfie is not the actions of someone working with the Insurrectionists. It does reflect poorly on them and the department but nothing shows them working with the domestic terrorists.

But to say they helped the terrorists is not what they were being investigated for.

even if they were refused the specific details on these cases today, is unconscionable. The state of journalism today...

On edit, another poster provided this link that at least gives some information on the charges:

I'm not completely awake yet and was trying to figure out what I was missing. Apparently the article was just assuming we all knew what these officers had done, but I had no idea.

It's that reliable well-proven model of "transparency" with cop shops everywhere called "The Opaque."

it offends some reporting entities to credit others, but that was context that should have been used--even if including it as general background. So, no. It is lazy and unprofessional reporting.

where a team is only as strong as the worst members. We need police reforms to improve conduct for situations like this. A few bad officers are enough to enable a major breach.
