Rose McGowan appeared with Larry Elder and accused Gov. Gavin Newsom's wife of trying to silence her
Source: Business Insider
Activist and actor Rose McGowan appeared alongside California gubernatorial candidate Larry Elder at a press conference on Sunday, two days before the state's recall election.
McGowan, a leading figure in the #MeToo movement, accused the wife of Elder's opponent, Gov. Gavin Newsom, of trying to silence her about movie producer Harvey Weinstein, The Washington Post's Dave Weigel reported.
In a statement provided to Insider, a spokesperson for Jennifer Siebel Newsom said McGowan's claim was a "complete fabrication."
"It's disappointing but not surprising to see political opponents launch these false attacks just days before the election. Their limited correspondence has been strictly as fellow survivors of sexual assault and in Jennifer's former capacity leading the Representation Project, an organization that fights limiting gender stereotypes and norms," the statement said.

IIRC she was the only one making accusations against Weinstein for a long time and they never went anywhere.

(1,678 posts)I have no problem if people want to support a candidate. Everyone is allowed to do so. That being said making claims and statements does invite response and those who make claims and statements had better be prepared for those responses.
As always the why is the question that matters. We dont get the why asked by the media nor answered by those asked.

(6,973 posts)Dealing with "Flirty Fishing?"
Flirty Fishing (FFing) is a form of evangelistic religious prostitution practiced by female members of the cult Children of God, currently known as Family International (TFI),[1][2] from around 1974 to 1987. According to some sources, hundreds of thousands of men were "fished" before the practice was discontinued.[3]
Etymology and definition
The term is derived from Matthew 4:19 from the New Testament, in which Jesus tells two fishermen that he will make them "fishers of men".[4] Cult leader David Berg extrapolated from this that women in his movement should be "flirty fishers" (also called "bait" or "fisherwomen" ). The targeted men were called "fish". The cult published several documents with exact instructions. Flirty Fishing was defined as using sex appeal for proselytizing. If masturbation, oral, or penetrative sex ensued, this was termed as "loving sexually",[5] and also counted as a "deep witness", meaning that the "bait" earned more brownie points within the group than by mere flirting. Berg noted that Flirty Fishing did not necessarily entail intercourse, but that this was by far the most efficient method of proselytizing.[6]
Within the Children of God Impact on members
Women who objected to being what the cult itself bluntly described as "God's whores" or "hookers for Jesus" were admonished not to "let self and pride enter in",[7] and reminded that their body did not really belong to them, as according to 1 Corinthians 6:1920 it had been "bought" (by Jesus through his crucifixion) "with a price".[8] After an initial phase, male members no longer partook in this drive, partially because of the cult's dismissive stance toward homosexuality, but also because Berg thought it did not "pay off financially".[5] Many of the flirty fishers had boyfriends, were married, or had children. In Family publications, flirty fishers and escort service practitioners (see below) frequently reported that they found their work hard, dangerous and exhausting.

(1,962 posts)As someone who can also scream "Me too!", I feel her and her pain on what she endured with Weinstein, almost certainly Marilyn Manson, and others. I know how painful such experiences can be, and how the scars remain for a good long time.
But that's about all we have in common.
All I've done is watch for years as the media treats her like some sort of "advocate" and "voice" for women, ignoring Ashley Judd and others (as pointed out prior in this thread). Rose's idea of being a "voice" for the MeToo movement? Attacking innocent and completely unrelated people (Mrs. Newsom, Obama's daughter), attacking completely innocent people who are probably more vulnerable than she is (such as transwomen), and acting like she is the only person in history to be the victim of a rich, powerful man.
When has she ever spoken up for any woman but herself? It's always been about her and her own experience, others be damned. We know she was not Weinstein's only victim, and yet, when it comes to Harvey Weinstein, it's always about Rose McGowan. Not Ashley Judd, not anyone else.
The fact she's now buddying up to Larry "She's too ugly for me to harass" Elder is proof of how little she cares about MeToo - or at least anyone besides her. Her teaming up with Elder would be like me teaming up with the Westboro Baptist Church. Elder is far more likely to harass or assault her than help her, and the kind of person who'd turn a blind eye or blame her if someone else harmed her.
But, this isn't about MeToo with Rose. Never was. Never will be. It's about her. It's about her either not caring about the people he's harmed, or, about something that benefits her (lower taxes or something?).
I'd say she should be ashamed of herself, but, honestly, she's gone so far off the deep end that I doubt she's capable of rational thought or shame at this point.
Shame on the media, though, for continuing to cover Rose and everything she says and does, and treating her as the face and voice of MeToo.
More Ashley Judd, please, who is indeed awesome as was stated upthread. Less Rose McGowan and her MeOnly cruelty.

(46,301 posts)Yup, "It's Obama's fault!"
Rose McGowan's endorsement of right-winger Larry Elder claims Obama is 'in' on Weinstein rapes
She then turned to attack former President Barack Obama, who she accused of being "in" on the rape and abuse by Harvey Weinstein.
"Obama's daughter interned for my rapist two months before I exposed him in the New York Times," she said. "They're all in it [together] and you know it."
Obama's daughter interned for the Weinstein Company for three months, and as of 2018, the company had never paid her. Presumably, if the Obamas knew about the Weinstein allegations they wouldn't have allowed their daughter to work for him.

(26,250 posts)She worked pretty consistently. Lots of shorts made for tv stuff and some voice work with one 'long running' tv series. I'd heard of 'Charmed' but never watched it. Then all stops in 2018 until some pre production stuff, now.
I kind of think Rose is the face of so many moderately talented, somewhat successful actresses who were subjected to some horrific treatment in their quest for work. For that, she has my utmost sympathy. Coming forward likely ruined any career she could have had.
But now she's aligning with just the sort of people who are they type that abused her, allowed the abuse or had no issue with the abuse. That's something I will never understand. It makes me wonder if she sought any help in dealing with her experiences. Or if she was offered the help, did she turn it down. She seems prone to lashing out. What ever the case, there's a lot of anger and I suspect unresolved issues boiling up in that woman.
I really believe her energies could have been focused in a more productive direction. From what I'm reading on a number of sites, she's lost a lot of, if not all, credibility.
That's all IMHO, of course.

(47,280 posts)All of this makes no sense whatsoever. It does sound like she may need some help.

(2,590 posts)Those should be considered notwithstanding her allegations (proven) against Harvey Weinstein. She was provably blackballed in Hollywood by Weinstein and had her career derailed, but the interviews she has given in the past four or five years reveal her to have other issues, which I don't believe were the result of abuse by Weinstein.
"...But now she's aligning with just the sort of people who are they type that abused her"
Exactly! There is a weird dynamic involved in abuse situations (involving adults only), in which a woman provides tacit consent to their abuser if there isn't immediate pushback and, sadly, they allow a situation like this to continue, as McGowan did. One doesn't have to work in the film industry to allow such a situation to continue, and women who are the victims of continued abuse have empowered their abusers because they don't believe they can leave without consequences that are more dire than their abuse.
