Newsom soundly defeats recall attempt

SACRAMENTO -- California Gov. Gavin Newsom survived a historic recall election Tuesday, winning a major vote of confidence during a COVID-19 pandemic that has shattered families and livelihoods and tested his ability to lead the state through the largest worldwide health crisis in modern times.
The recall offered Republicans their best chance in more than a decade to take the helm of the largest state in the union. But the effort was undercut when Newsom and the nation's leading Democrats, aided by visits to California by President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, portrayed the campaign to oust the governor as a "life and death" battle against "Trumpism" and far-right anti-vaccine activists.
Conservative talk show host Larry Elder led the 46 candidates on the second question on the ballot hoping to become governor, but that became meaningless after a majority of California voters decided to keep Newsom in office.
Moments after national television networks called the election for Newsom, the governor walked into the California Democratic Headquarters in Sacramento to talk with reporters, forgoing a victory celebration as is commonplace in traditional campaigns.

I know that there are many other threads at DU about the recall vote, but this one goes right to the main course:
"Newsom wins."

(599 posts)Newsom isn't great. The voters in the great state are just not stupid enough to fall for another hustler like Larry Elder. He turned this recall election into a 2 horse race, and that helped put Newsom way over the top.

(6,974 posts)Maybe not great, but sure a heck of a lot better than Elder, who doesn't believe in abortion even if a woman is the victim of a rape or if a little girl is the victim of incest at the hands of a relative.
Some media outlets are of course spinning Newsom's win as though he barely crawled over the finish line. I'm sick of the mostly liberal media which doesn't exist with their biased, skewing more to the right reporting 🙄

(47,354 posts)I've always liked Gavin Newsom ever since he was May of San Francisco. I think he's pretty remarkable.

(3,601 posts)He is not perfect, but he's done a pretty good job, especially during the pandemic.
Do you live in California?

(4,168 posts)I can't think of any elected leader, or any person at all, who is "perfect" at what they do. Okay, maybe Rachel Maddow, but other than her....

(1,303 posts)They called Larry Elder a conservative talk show host when he is actually a far right extremist talk show host. Their description normalizes his extremism

(3,166 posts)There were 46 "candidates" on the ballot to replace him? That is twisted. So if Newsom had gotten 49% of the vote and the other votes were somewhat evenly distributed, a candidate could have won with only like 5% of the vote? That is completely insane.

After seeing whats going on in Texas and Florida it scared the citizens it could happen in our great blue state of California!

(42,862 posts)I'd suggest getting rid of the ability to recall... or increase the number of signatures required to trigger a recall.
What a ridiculous farce that thing was. Even more obscene when one considers that Elder could have ascended into the governor's office with 20% of the vote (or something like that, if I'm recalling correctly.)

(13,033 posts)other headlines is "Newsom survives recall..."
"Survives"? BS
63% to 36% and the MSM jackasses call it survives.
