COVID-19 in Florida: State passes 50,000 total coronavirus deaths

SOUTH FLORIDA SUN SENTINEL | SEP 16, 2021 AT 2:12 PM
Florida passed 50,000 COVID-19 deaths on Thursday, 535 days after the state recorded its first death, as the state increased its overall death count by 1,554.
The state also reported 9,760 new confirmed cases of the virus, a drop from the past two days that sunk the 7-day average to 11,816, the lowest since July 22, according to Thursdays data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.
And on Thursday, the number of people hospitalized for COVID in Florida dropped below 10,000 for the first time since late July, a 19% decline over the past week, according to data from the Florida Hospital Association.
The large number of new reported deaths were spread out over the past two weeks. Deaths are counted on the day they occur, not the day they are reported, and can take up to two weeks or more to be reflected in the data.
At least 2,400 Floridians have died through the first two weeks of September.
The 7-day average for new deaths rose to 362, the second-highest level of September. August was the deadliest month of the pandemic, when 8,144 died, according to CDC data.

(13,650 posts)that in 2022, the purple states will be a bit more blue due to unvaccinated Republican deaths. So there is a silver lining to this pandemic.

(286 posts)Many of these people do not have health insurance. Ever since President Obama set up a system for the uninsured to get insurance these are the people who refused to get Obamacare. So you and I are going to foot the bill for them.

(7,828 posts)Florida officials have been cooking the numbers since day one, often by mis-assigning the cause of death to heart failure, lung failure, brain damage, pneumonia and other effects of COVID without stating COVID as the primary condition. They've been caught at it by their own statistician. I expect when the true numbers are revealed we will see that at least twice as many Floridians have died from COVID since the pandemic began, if not more than that.
Of course this doesn't mention the number of other patients in Florida whose treatment was delayed or never delivered because COVID patients had filled the ICU, the halls and most of the beds, taken most of the Oxygen and other medical services, or exhausted the staff to the extent that no new patients of any class or diagnosis could be reasonably admitted. these numbers don't include how many of them died due to delayed surgery or treatment.
Death Santis has concocted the New Inquisition: death to true believers and Desantis Deniers alike.

Astoundingly incompetent. DeSantis should be charged with something like second degree mass murder.

(7,410 posts)He's very competent at killing people. Give him credit.
For those who enjoy death and suffering, DeSantis will deserve another term.
For those who cannot figure out the fact that DeSantis is killing their friends, neighbors, and family members, watch them perish. But don't explore the 5 year-old's capacity to examine cause and effect.

(151 posts)As an older vaccinated and careful Florida resident, I hope the majority of our still alive voters will remember DeSantis and his death wish for all of us. Anybody stupid enough to condone his anti vax and no masking rules should be dead by the next election, lets hope science regains a foothold here and folks vote him out.

(14,483 posts)I've felt all along DeSantis and Florida governments are doing these demented things to their citizens purely for the sake of business interests; primarily tourism, real estate and retail. Money from those three along with agriculture is what gets them elected.
Their behavior during this pandemic should once and for all be enough evidence that most Republican politicians are hardened psychopaths.
Worst of all is the certainty that Florida sends thousands of infected visitors back to their home states each week to further the spread of COVID-19 everywhere.
