U.S. to buy hundreds of millions more doses of Pfizer vaccine to donate to the world

Source: Washington Post

The Biden administration is buying hundreds of millions more doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine to donate to the world, according to two people familiar with the deal, as the United States looks to increase efforts to share vaccines with the global population.

The announcement of the purchase is slated for early next week and timed to the United Nations General Assembly meeting, said the people acquainted with the deal, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the donation. The White House declined to comment. Pfizer did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Details of the deal were not final Friday.

In June, the United States purchased 500 million doses of the vaccine to be distributed by Covax, the World Health Organization-backed initiative to share doses around the globe, and officials said the vaccines would be targeted at low- and middle-income countries.

The White House is also expected to formally announce Friday that it is hosting a virtual summit of world leaders and global health advocates alongside next week’s U.N. General Assembly meetings, said three people who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the pending announcement.

…in the same manner they’re having a tirade about vaccine mandates for the Afghan refugees; regardless of the fact that the resettlement process has a vaccination provision as part of their immigration process.

I just can’t with them…

Especially when everyone in the US has had more than ample opportunity to get a shot and millions (billions?) worldwide have had no chance. It's even beyond humanitarianism; protecting them protects us (from further waves of variants).

Research and development costs a lot of $. Do you think these companies will do that with no profit? Most countries won't have the technology to make these vaccines even if parents were released.

The problem is that many of the countries that need the vaccine do not have the type of infrastructure to store some of these vaccines - notably the mRNA vaccines. Full Stop.

Most of the rest of the world has been distributing the adenovirus-type ones which have easier storage requirements, and it's a matter of getting more of that out AND getting the logistics and infrastructure in these countries up and running. We only have one of those types approved (Janssen (J&J)).

We have seen over and over and over and over when there is some "disaster" - countries and individuals will donate stuff, it's shipped to those countries, and there it sits - on a plane in a hangar, on a ship at a port, in a warehouse shoved in the corner, NEVER getting out to those who needs it because there is no distribution plan, no trucks available to load to get it distributed, no places to store the stuff temporarily, and often no roads to get to the "last mile" places where people who most need the stuff, live.

It's sadly a shit show.

And right now, I am listening to the FDA VRBPAC meeting, where the "public comments" session going on right now and all the FUCKING ANTI-VAX loons signed up to give their presentations.

They are discussing the third dose, and anti-vaxxers won't even get the first two. This doesn't apply to them.

(and you should know this) - "transparency".

It's the "public comments". Generally the people who attend these meetings to give those comments are non-Committee members and are often members of various organizations that follow "public health" issues (including people who are physicians, and other scientific personnel).

Basically each person who signed up is given 3 minutes to give their comment.

The problem with the FDA's committee vs CDC's committee at the moment is no one seems to strictly be controling the clock for FDA's meeting.

CDC says - "when the timer hits red and you are at 'time's up', if you keep talking, your mic will be cut". FDA has no controller at all. The software just counts down from green to yellow to red, and people end up going on for a minute or two past their time - usually with nothing but bullshit. In fact the last one (I think they are done with this segment now because they went on a break) included some fucking Niki Minaj-supporting "doctor" (and I put "doctor" in quotes).

and I am beginning to think there is a genetic disposition to it, with a lack of being able to experience "empathy" being part of that. Anything that triggers something in them to continually react with outrage, like the rampant but implausible propaganda that is spreading like wildfire on social media that they voraciously consume, is enough to keep them "fed".
