White House says images of Border Patrol with apparent whip are 'obviously horrific'

Source: NBC

White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Monday called pictures that appeared to show a U.S. Border Patrol agent on horseback with a whip to deter migrants "horrific," but declined to say what consequences there should be for the agent's actions.

"I have seen some of the footage. I don't have the full context. I can't imagine what context would make that appropriate, but I don't have additional details," she told reporters at the daily White House briefing. "I don't think anyone seeing that footage would think it's acceptable or appropriate."

A picture by photographer Paul Ratje showed the agent on horseback grabbing one of the migrants as the man tried to cross into the United States from Ciudad Acuña, Mexico, on Sunday. The El Paso Times reported the agent had swung his whip and charged his horse at people trying to cross, shouting, "Let's go! Get out now! Back to Mexico!"

With a whip seems very racist to me. Since that whip is being used against
Haitian black people .

Didn't a significant amount of the slave trade sell captive Haitians as slaves?

the cbp is infected with racists who got emboldened during the Trump era. I believe the Biden administration has yet to remove some of the Trump appointees over there.

but the first thing I thought of were all the Afghan civilians we "did not" kill then... oops... yes, we did kill...

We have got to strip out these Trump and other racist thugs from every department. They're not doing us any good. Either we ARE for Humanitarian rights are we are NOT. Make up your mind Democrats, and stick to it. Republicans have made up their minds, and everyone knows where they stand. Now, make up yours and let us know where YOU stand. Immigration CAN be done humanely. You don't have to flay skin and rope necks to do it. I'm still p'o'd about the screw up in Afghanistan, and then the abortion mess in TX, and now THIS? It's putting me over the edge with a party I thought I knew...

Once millions of climate refugees start moving north to escape societal collapse from heatwaves, droughts and crop failures, I figure we'll be enforcing our border security with machine guns and drones instead of whips and horses.

..............Homeland Security head Alejandro Mayorkas was also asked about the photo while visiting Del Rio, Texas, where more than 15,000 mostly Haitian migrants have converged on a border bridge. He said the reporter who asked him about the whip was "assuming the facts," and suggested it was possible the agent was simply holding a long rein.

"To ensure control of the horse, long reins are used but we are going to investigate the facts to ensure that the situation is as we understand it to be and if it's anything different, we will respond accordingly," he said.

The Homeland Security secretary was joined by Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz, who defended his agency's use of horses, saying they "play an integral part in the security response."

"We do not know who are the smugglers or who are the migrants, so it's important that those border patrol agents maintain a level of security for both themselves and for the migrant population as they were trafficking back and forth," Ortiz said.

As for the possibility an agent was using a whip, he said, "We'll certainly look into the matter to make sure we do not have activity" that is "unacceptable."

more. We need to stick to the facts. This whole episode is being used to hurt the JRB administration and it should not be used in such a way. This is an incredibly complex problem that is going to take a long time to solve. Hypocrisy is definitely at play from the Right, as well.

Albeit one that is way too long. It is not a whip.

Not condoning anything. But you are correct in that we need to stick to the facts. This is bad enough without it being embellished.

Reins that length are intended to be used as whips, to lash the horse when it misbehaves and to control cattle.
When working as a film extra in Tucson, I had a cowboy teach me to ride, and that was one of the lessons.
I don't care much for riding.

Either way, I wonder who thought sending mounted agents to handle that was a good idea. They had to have known that it wouldn't looked good, and the past images it would bring to mind.

The videos I've seen didn't show anyone getting whipped and the complaints were that they had whips. There is a possibility I haven't see videos where they were whipping people with them, though. I'll have to dig through the videos some more to see if I can find ones that show them being used as a whip. If that's the case then I will take your point of "Who cares?"

In a statement Monday night, the Department of Homeland Security said the agency "does not tolerate the abuse of migrants in our custody and we take these allegations very seriously."

Yet, locking my wife in a room with just a ratty mattress, taking her cell phone so she couldn't contact her family in China, her embassy, or her husband, subjecting her to anti-Chinese bigotry, and allowing her two 15 minute breaks to use the bathroom outside the room, since the one in the room was "disgusting" as she put it, in SEATAC airport is acceptable to DHS.

Some Western riders have ridiculously long reins to be able to whack the horse's rump to go faster. You don't see a whip handle. But still, totally wrong. TFG holdover, that do not see migrants as people.

at the border? CBS radio led their 8 pm brief with abbott blathering about this being President Biden's fault.

Who hired the beasts on horseback? The only thing I blame Mr. Biden's administration for is that Homeland security didn't immediately do background checks on all of current employees and dismiss any that had sketchy backgrounds or incidents on their job evaluations.

abbortt and the other r's blaming Mr. Biden can go to hell.
