House Freedom Caucus presses GOP to oppose defense bill over including women in the draft
Source: NBC news
Republican members of the House Freedom Caucus on Wednesday called on their party to oppose the National Defense Authorization Act because of an amendment in the bill that would allow the registration of women for the Selective Service System.
The House Republican Conference signaled its support for the NDAA, the annual defense policy and funding bill, in a memo Monday. The amendment to include women in the Selective Service System was introduced by Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, D-Pa., earlier this month and passed through a committee with bipartisan support.
"The Democrats and, sadly, some Republicans want to draft your daughters. This is wrong, and it's immoral, and they are doing it anyway," Rep. Mary Miller, R-Ill., said. "We are proud of the courageous women who have served and are serving in our military in defending our nation, but our mothers, sisters, wives and daughters should not be part of this draft. This is left-wing, woke agenda gone too far. The vote is tomorrow, and the swamp wants to pass the bill, she added.
Women currently make up 16 percent of the nations armed forces, serving in every branch of the U.S. military, according to the United Service Organizations. The $768 billion defense bill funds the branches of the armed forces, service members' payroll and veteran health care, among other areas of the military.

(58,785 posts)It's not like it's not the right thing to do. The committee passed it with bipartisan support, even if they knew it'd be removed. In the real world, people cannot participate as equals if they cannot bear equal responsibilities, and RW misygnists and racists know that one down to their bones.
Oh, and it's not their votes we want or risk losing. Feminism became bipartison a long time ago.

(4,170 posts)There must be better ways to promote equality of women, than legislating that they can be "equally" used as involuntary cannon fodder in some future war-- even theoretically.
The fact is that the Selective Service System is now a totally unneeded government boondoggle which we can easily do without. We haven't had a draft for almost 50 years, and have fought several wars on the strength of our all-volunteer army. It's time has come and gone.
For Democrats to abolish it would also serve them politically much better than going in the opposite direction. We are in circumstances bad enough in 2022-4, without adding this into the mix.
The Democrats should abolish selective service registration and establish themselves as the anti-draft party-- not establish themselves as the "pro-draft party", which this measure would clearly tend to do.

(2,694 posts)The issue is some states use selective service registration to discriminate as you either comply before you turn a certain age or you can never comply so it is an easy way for states to restrict social services to exclude the poor and minorities with out explicitly targeting them. So this would open the door to this limit only applying to once any challenges to this new requirement finish litigating, and basically reset the clock on these limits to make it illegal to apply them to anyone who turned 18 before now.

I would assume if someone 'forgot' to register for the Selective Service as required by law,
they could go in 'late' to register.
And how would a state use the Federal Selective Service list to:
"restrict social services to exclude the poor and minorities" ?

Simple the aid offices always ask for the paperwork proof in minority districts in some states.
And no you either register within 30 days of your 18th birthday or you didn't, and you're supposed to keep them informed of your moves through age 26. There is no amnesty, this was a sneaky thing snuck in by Regan. It is discriminatory against Men as Women aren't required to comply. I understand that Women are abused enough in our society, but this is a glaring injustice.
Anyone with sons, make sure they register when the turn 18 and keep track of how to notify the feds if you have to move before they are 26 or whenever the registration requirement ends.
Final catch is you have to keep the confirmation letter, if that issue ever comes up even decades later.

(50,453 posts)The Defense Department says there will never be another draft. The last time they had one was Vietnam, and the conscripts showed their appreciation for being required to serve their country by smoking enough opium to kill an elephant.
Thats on a per-man basis, kids. And the amount of cannabis they ingested was even more legendary. Anyway, the Army decided they didnt need this shit and told Selective Service to fuck off.
So
they could register women, men, Chihuahua dogs, mountain lions, badgers, 15-year-old boys, inanimate objects and theoretical constructs and the Armys answer would be the same: No. Were not taking them and you cant make us.
