Mexican forces surround border migrant camp

Source: Associated Press

CIUDAD ACUÑA, Mexico (AP) — A camp where more than 14,000 migrants had waited along the Texas border just days ago was dramatically smaller Thursday, while across the river in Mexico, Haitian migrants in a growing camp awoke surrounded by security forces as a helicopter thundered overhead.

The number of migrants at the Texas camp had been reduced to 3,671, Val Verde County Judge Lewis Owens said Thursday morning. Authorities over the past day or so had ramped up efforts to remove migrants from the camp, said Owens, the top elected official in the county where Del Rio is located.

The United States and Mexico appeared eager to end the increasingly politicized humanitarian situation at the border, even as the U.S. expulsion of Haitians to their troubled homeland caused blowback for the administration of President Joe Biden.

The Biden administration’s special envoy to Haiti, Daniel Foote, submitted a letter of resignation protesting the “inhumane” large-scale expulsions of Haitian migrants, U.S. officials said Thursday.

Emma Lazarus would be weeping if she saw this.

With our repressive, xenophobic, bigoted immigration policies, the Statue of Liberty has become a "corporate symbol," Land of immigrants has become a Brand Name, and “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" has become a corporate jingle.

Our immigration policies need to be changed, but there little political will to overturn decades of institutionalized xenophobia.

and all the voters who thought Muslim Bans and "Kung Flu" were perfectly acceptable.

I said this yesterday in a response:

One SCOTUS justice's voice is more important than 10 million American voices
One billionaire's check has more weight than a million American citizen's checks.

no interest in reforming the laws that the Supreme court is having to rule on. I'd really like to understand what Joe's thinking is on this - I haven't heard much.
