(40,153 posts)This is nothing less than an abuse of the Senate and the lack of term limits.
Grassley demonstrates, along with Dianne Feinstein that the rules need to change. Both of these Senators have demonstrated a slide in cognitive skills in recent years, in Sen. Feinstein's case the situation seems even more clear.
For some historical context: Sen. Strom Thurman of South Carolina died in office at the age of 100 years. He had dementia and no understanding of his surroundings. The office was completely run by staff. He would often stand in the hallway handing out candy to those passing by with no awareness of who or where he was. It was a complete disgrace.

There is a time to retire and that time is past. I think Grassley's best hope is for resurrection. His mind is made of sand at this point.

(45,783 posts)I'm in NJ-9, with progressive democrat Bill Pascrell, Jr., who's age 84 and still kicking up dust.
His wannabe republican challenger, Billy Prempeh, has resorted to attacks on Pascrell's age, equating it with being tired, decrepit, and out of touch. Let him try that argument now with Grassley (88) running for re-election.

They went after Biden for being old when TFG couldn't walk a golf course, hell he couldn't walk up or down steps.
If you think they won't be hypocritical about this issue...I can sell you a few bridges.

(3,164 posts)I remember when they had to literally wheel Strom Thurmond into the Senate chamber. It was obvious he had no idea where he was. Even though he was a decrepit old Dixiecrat, it was kinda sad. Feinstein is sad, too.
89 is definitely too old to be running for office. I can't wait to retire myself at age 60, and enjoy the rest of my life. I can't imagine wanting to be in the craziness of DC at almost 90 years old.

The waiting game for Chuck Grassley is over: He's running for reelection.
The Iowa Republican senator announced on Twitter Friday morning he will run for an eighth term, a move that makes it more likely the GOP can keep control of his seat in next year's midterm elections. Though Iowa has trended red in recent years and Grassley just turned 88 this month, Republican Party leaders have nonetheless pressed him to seek reelection amid their broader efforts to claim the Senate majority next year.
Grassley delivered his news in a tweet at 4 a.m. Central Daylight Time, emphasizing his exercise regimen and early wake-up time.
"Its 4 a.m. in Iowa so Im running. I do that 6 days a week. Before I start the day I want you to know what Barbara and I have decided. Im running for re-electiona lot more to do, for Iowa," Grassley said in his tweet.
Grassley romped to a seventh term in 2016 by 25 points and will face former Democratic Rep. Abby Finkenauer in next year's general election. If Grassley had retired, Republicans could have faced a messy primary in the race to replace him...................................................
