Cook Political Report shifts Virginia governor's race to 'toss-up'
Source: The Hill
The nonpartisan Cook Political Report shifted the Virginia gubernatorial race from "lean Democratic" to "toss-up" on Friday, just over a month from Election Day.
The development comes as polls show the race, which is widely viewed as a barometer for next year's midterm elections, is becoming increasingly close.
A University of Mary Washington survey released on Wednesday found Republican Glenn Youngkin leading former Virginia Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe 48 percent to 43 percent among likely voters. McAuliffe led Youngkin 43 percent to 38 percent among all registered voters.
Another poll released this week, conducted by former Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway, found McAuliffe leading Youngkin 46 percent to 42 percent. And a Washington Post-Schar School survey released last week showed McAuliffe leading Youngkin by three points, 50 percent to 47 percent, among likely voters.

McAuliffe has been seen as the front-runner for much of the race given his high name ID and recent Democratic electoral victories in the commonwealth. However, Youngkin, a former private equity CEO, has poured money into the race in an effort to boost his name ID.

(26,731 posts)I've been worried about seeing him consistently under 50% when he has such high name recognition... and, yes, there has been a poll actually showing him behind...
... but I'd still say the race is a solid "leans D"

(2,125 posts)And for over a month, no ads to counter from McAuliff. This was a big mistake. It allowed for Trumpkin to self-identify without any push back from McAuliff. No wonder the polls are close. I just hope and pray that McAuliff can pull this one out, or I fear that we will turn into another Texas.

(6,974 posts)I feel your pain, as I live in California and had to endure all of those "polls" which said that Newsom could lose his sham re-call election to self-hating, black, tRump twin Elder. But I was never worried. I knew that California would never allow a black tRumper to run the governorship of the 5th largest economy in the world, and as we saw Elder got his doors blown off by Governor Newsom in that sham of a recall race. Besides, we have a deep blue legislature which would have all but stopped that clown Elder from accomplishing much. Hell, I didn't want him accomplishing anything nor be Gov. of California.
I trust the Cook Political Report, but still think that McAuliff will win the governorship of Virginia.

(5,007 posts)The right wing in VA is livid about the changes that Northam has made. Plus Bidens numbers are low now. I dont think he could help him much. I wish Obama could swing through here and get democrats excited and ready to vote. I guess we will start seeing signs soon. Usually there are signs everywhere. McCauliffe has Facebook ads with polls showing the race essentially tied. Not sure if he believes the race is tied or if he is just trying to raise more money. Hope VA does not flip red again.
