A judge appointed by former President George W. Bush angrily shamed an accused MAGA rioter on Friday during a heated court hearing.
Politico reports that U.S. District Court Judge Reggie Walton "shouted" at defendant Anthony Mariotto shortly after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge related to his participation in the January 6th riots at the United States Capitol building.
"You've disgraced this country in the eyes of the world and my inclination would be to lock you up, but since the government isn't asking me to do that... I won't," said Walton, referring to sentencing guidelines that did not request prison time for Mariotto, who pleaded guilty to a single charge of illegally parading or protesting in the Capitol.

"I find it outrageous that American citizens would do what you did, so you better walk the straight and narrow, sir, you understand?" he asked........................

I think this is one of the better things a judge could do--publicly shame them. Some rioters may be affected hopefully.

(36,055 posts)After all, it was the prosecution's choice to go for a misdemeanor charge. Probably part of a larger precedent building strategy.

(1,242 posts)Gorilla dust and dancing around so that he doesn't get criticised for allowing them to plead w/o prison time. If this republican appointed judge was indeed embarrassed or his nation embarrassed and dealing with a liberal, tbere would certainly be prison time. Why is violent insurrection, tresspassing and damage to federal property not prison time worthy? If during a tour of the capital, I went rogue, went off on my own, broke something, interrupted a congressional proceeding and scared the hell out of congressional members, that I would ever see the light of day? Whatevs!

Some of these jerks should be used as an example of "DON'T BE A JERK AND DO THIS SHIT! DON'T BE THIS GUY!"

Sorry to yell like that, but that particular line is best delivered at the top of ones lungs.

(42,862 posts)... and they should be tried based on that charge. The punishment should be handed to them that fits the charge or that is accordance with whatever plea-deal has been struck. No more. No less.
The prosecutors and judges are not stupid. Nor are they complicit (as others in this thread, and similar threads continue to insinuate.)

(8,254 posts)they need new definitions of charges that reflect what they really are domestic Terrorist..... peeing on Mr Wiffle's lawn is a misdemeanor, partaking in a riot to over throw our gov is not.

These Trump monkeys are being treated as petty criminals. This is weak as fuck on the part of the DOJ.

(42,862 posts)... all these other fantasy outcomes and punishments are meaningless.
No it's not weak. They are enforcing the laws as written and prosecuting them as prescribed. If they were not enforcing the laws, that would be "weak as fuck".

(42,862 posts)Not every case is the same. Not every mental patient is the same. Automatic maximum penalties reminds me of the ridiculous "three strikes" laws. They are enforcing the laws on the books and they're being charged with what the prosecutors believe they can get a conviction for or what will result in a reasonable plea deal. All this armchair quarterbacking and 2nd-guessing serves no good purpose.

Can't he/she say "I don't care what the prosecution wants. You're going to prison." ?
