House Budget Committee votes to pass the $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill

Source: CNN

The House Budget Committee voted Saturday to pass the $3.5 trillion spending bill out of committee and send it to the House floor.

The vote was 20 to 17 with Democratic Rep. Scott Peters of California joining Republicans to vote against the bill. It came as a necessary step for the bill to reach the full House floor, where it can be amended.

Democrats have been struggling to pass President Joe Biden's economic agenda, including the massive tax and spending bill that would expand education, health care and childcare support, address the climate crisis and make further investments in infrastructure.
The bill has raised concerns among moderates who worry some of the measures, including on drug pricing and climate, go too far, as progressives say they've already compromised enough. Republicans are united in their opposition to it.

During its Saturday meeting, the House Budget committee could not change what other committees have already voted to approve.

This story has been updated with additional information.

It's time to stop obstructing President Biden's "Build Back Better" agenda.

by the public. Name those policies the Republicans stop. Repeat "daycare for kids", "community college for young adults", "ears nose and eye care for seniors". Whatever it is that gets taken out of the 3.5T say it loud and clear at every 2022 campaign stop.

She’s already said that it won’t come to the floor.

This is likely an attempt to show progressives that progress is being made toward passing the reconciliation bill. But it likely isn’t enough

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has signaled to colleagues in both chambers that she will not put the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation package on the House floor for a vote until it’s clear that it can also pass the 50-50 Senate.

Some Democrats are calling for the House to move as soon as possible on the package, even if two key centrist votes in the Senate, Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.), haven’t yet signed off on it.

As well as in her most recent "dear colleague" letter.

And, of course, that was part of her commitment to the moderates that allowed the bill to get in to the committee in the first place.

22. She had to trade that away

That wasn’t a deal or commitment - it was her position/strategy shared with the CPC and senate leadership.

Then she ran into a roadblock a month ago. She couldn’t even start the reconciliation process (without which we would get nothing at all) without several moderates who insisted that the infrastructure compromise be passed first.

She was successful in holding them off, but had to trade a commitment to hold a vote by Monday and to not hold any vote on the larger package until Senate moderates had already approved it.

At the time - she was convinced (or at least tried to sell) that the Senate would get their act together before then… but then Manchin declared his desire to “pause”.

If nothing else… this will not be a boring week.

if Moderates want to make specific cuts to the bill.

I have a problem that some moderates won't actually say what they want, which makes me question whether they want a reconciliation bill at all.

FFS give a lowball offer at least. Say it's 1 trillion. List out what your starting point is so we can negotiate already.

I don’t know why ANY Democratic rep would side with a Republican after what they are admittedly trying to do to Biden and our country. It’s all in the name of trump. Fuck off Scott Peters you spineless wimp.

and tell him to pass this and stop favoring his personal financial interests. I called since he was my rep, so I just called after hours and left a message stating I was a constituent and how disappointed I am by this vote. I usually do this with GQP reps but since Peters is voting like one (greedy, corrupt bastard) I called him too.
