Centrist Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) on Monday raised a red flag over his Democratic colleagues' push to include a carbon tax in the reconciliation package they will need his vote to pass later this year.
A plan to tax carbon as a way to combat climate change and raise revenue for the reconciliation package is gaining momentum, and some Senate Democrats think that Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) is open to the idea after she raised global warming as a key concern during an interview with the Arizona Republic last week.
But Manchin, who represents coal-rich West Virginia, is not a fan of the idea.
"I just heard about that," he told reporters Monday when asked about the new push for the carbon tax. "Any type of a tax is going to be passed on to the people."

With all due respect Joe coal is a dying energy source. It'll go the way of whale oil and buggy whips. Your state will have to adjust and reinvent itself as many other states have done.

(42,862 posts)... the Democrats would have a 2-vote deficit. It would be 51 to 49.
Joe Manchin is a Democrat. Count your blessings.

(10,156 posts)He is a Democrat. In name only along with Sinema. They are holding Biden's agenda hostage because they are bought and paid for by dark money. Doesn't matter if it gives us a majority. McConnell still runs it all with his obstructionist bullshit

(15,220 posts)I see the cheering squad showed up.
I tire of Manchin holding up all things that progressives need to get done. He has blatantly showed us who his handlers are, and his full intent cannot be denied. As you say, McConnell is still in charge. I tire of being told nothing can ge done to change that. The Dems need to figure it out.

(42,862 posts)... I can see how some casual and non-critical observers may think that. But he's not the one deciding which bills get to the floor. He's not in charge of committee assignments. He's not able to turn the 1/6 investigation into a farce.
As frustrating as things are, they could be worse. Much worse.
People need to count their blessings and stop shitting on the Democrats.

(4,701 posts)I can see an apologist for tiptoeing, handwringing, payola-laden DINOs and plants with clarity.
This casual observer for one thinks massive and courageous direct actions on the part of our Democratic leaders would provide us all with a tremendous outlet for our frustrations. That is not criticism; it is encouragement.

When the old style light bulbs were being phased out, I saw a man in a suit and tie in the supermarket, he had a shopping cart filled with light bulbs. I think they were 99 cents a pair. And I know people who still want more of them.
I've moved beyond CFL (which had their problems - mine burned out years before their time) and now I use LEDs which are just great. And the new LED flashlights ... small, bright, batteries last me almost 2 years. One little bulb! And $1 at Walmart.

(7,278 posts)Yes. That's the point. The long term costs of carbon pollution must be factored in to the short term costs to facilitate a switch to better energy sources.
