Pelosi rules out raising debt limit through reconciliation
Source: The Hill
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told reporters Wednesday that Democrats will not use budget reconciliation to raise the federal debt ceiling, raising doubts over whether Congress will find a way to avert potential economic disaster.
When asked Wednesday evening if Pelosi had ruled out using budget reconciliation to raise or suspend the debt ceiling, the speaker replied "Yes."
Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) also shot down using that process to prevent the U.S. from defaulting on its debt.
Pelosi spoke to reporters shortly after the House passed a bill to suspend the debt ceiling until December 2022 largely along party lines, with two Democrats opposed to the measure and one Republican voting in favor. Shortly before the vote, the speaker successfully quashed a rebellion among some moderate Democrats who did not want to vote for a debt ceiling hike that is doomed in the Senate.

(26,366 posts)"There is only one viable option to deal with the debt limit: Congress needs to increase or suspend it, as it has done approximately 80 times, including three times during the last Administration," White House spokesperson Mike Gwin said in a statement to Insider.

(42,862 posts)Yet another backhanded and passive-aggressive way of insinuating one's belief that our Democratic leadership are idiots and fools. What useful purpose does it serve? It's just another example of how people are oddly willing to do and say things that create an atmosphere of fear and hopelessness and negativity. Negativity generates apathy. Apathy discourages voter turnout. Low voter turnout gives Republicans a chance to steal the elections.

(26,366 posts)after the end of this week, this bill authorizes the government to spend money until December 3rd.
The government operates at a deficit and has to borrow money. The government will reach the legal limit of how much it can borrow ('the debt limit') around December 18th. If the debt limit isn't raised by then the government can't borrow any more money to pay for things it is already legally authorized to pay for.
So 2 separate issues:
1 - How much the government can spend.
2 - How much the government can borrow.

(5,601 posts)Senate reconciliation bill. But why would Pelosi care if it went through reconciliation?
Calista241
(5,584 posts)Therefore she has to make sure her bill aligns perfectly with the Senate bill, and the Sneate has to worry about reconciliation rules, or nothing goes anywhere.

(26,693 posts)The House had just passed another debt ceiling bill and was sending it to the Senate. Was she supposed to say "yeah... two more of these and we'll have to give up and do it with reconciliation".
But that's still the most likely outcome unless Republicans are convinced that everyone will blame them for a shutdown. They don't see to think so and they really want Democrats to set a new ceiling figure.
