Manchin says reconciliation bill must include controversial Hyde Amendment
Source: The Hill
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said late Wednesday that an expansion of Medicaid that Democrats are seeking to pass as part of their massive reconciliation bill must include the Hyde Amendment to get his support.
"Yeah, we're not taking the Hyde Amendment off. Hyde's going to be on," Manchin told National Review when asked about a proposed Medicaid-like program in the reconciliation bill.
"It has to be. It has to be. That's dead on arrival if that's gone," Manchin, who has described himself as "pro-life, and proud of it," added.
Under the Hyde Amendment, Medicaid and other federal programs are prohibited from covering abortion expenses. Government spending bills have included the stipulation since 1976.

(7,392 posts)It was announced at least 3 months ago that the Hyde Amendemnt would not be part of the paskage. Which big donor twisted Manchin's arm? We saw something like this come out of Arizona recently and sure enough it happened right after a big nonation was made. It is CItizens United at work again.

(26,693 posts)And Manchin announced eight months ago (and several times since and for years previously) that he would never vote for any budget without it.
Give that the authors presumably want 51 votes so that their work actually becomes law... Why is it coming up now?

(3,940 posts)McConnell would be the Majority Leader again with control over the Senate's agenda. Republicans would chair all the committees. Republicans would decide what Senate investigations are pursued. Republicans would determine which nominees are confirmed.
It would be just like when Jim Jeffords became an independent in 2001 and began caucusing with the Democrats.

(18,581 posts)Yes, abortion costs should be included in Medicare though few people over 64 will need one, and it's a strike against women, but how expensive is an abortion these days? RU486, the medical prescription can be obtained from the good people at PP, and a procedure could be co-opted as well.
That leaves a small number who may not be able to afford it or unwilling to accept help, but we can end this Hyde nonsense later. Planned Parenthood and The ACLU are something I donate to regularly.

The midterms are coming and too soon after that the GOP will be asking if people are better off now than they were four years ago. Then some idiot will say "Only I can fix it" and we lose everything.
In my opinion this is no time to push in all our chips over the Hyde Amendment.

(22,145 posts)end Hyde. The midterms are always just around the corner, or we have to get ready for a presidential election, or if we could just get X amount of senators, THEN we could finally end it.
No. It's *always* a good time to end Hyde. Biden pledged to do so. Now he can.
JohnnyRingo
(18,581 posts)...and Biden's sole achievement can go down in the history books that he made it possible for Medicare to fund abortions. In the states where it's still legal.
It's not quite The Great Society or The American Care Act, but it'll help those thousands a year who can't find a way to pay for their abortion.
WhiskeyGrinder
(22,145 posts)Biden ran on his experience in the senate, his expertise with dealing with recalcitrant caucus members, his ability to foster bipartisanship, and his pledge to eliminate Hyde. Caving here would put the lie to all of that as well as weakening the bill.

Why doesn't he just change to being a Republican and get it over with??
Pride goeth before a fall, and he is very proud of his power and wielding it with little concern over the status of the nation. He'd be surprised at how little admiration he has for his positions, and how much the rest of us are sick of him.

(11,535 posts)...so I'm not dissing a Democrat? While I mull that over, let me just say that a single individual, substantially outside the mainstream ethos of his or her party, should not wield this kind of power. Quirk of the numbers that currently exist, overlaid on the procedural bedrock or not.

(50,168 posts)so his one vote is measly and not earth shattering. I watched him having his outdoor press conference today and it struck me what he's all about. He's an attention whore. Not unlike Trump. He's enjoying every nanosecond of being cajoled and followed and quizzed and booked on television and able to get the POTUS to drop everything to hear his every brain dropping. (12,450 posts)regarding abortion. You say a few years ago Biden had a change of heart. Biden has aknowleged the need for abortion rights. He changed a few years ago, what is Manchins excuse for supporting the hyde ammendment when repukes want to end abortion rights? What side is he on with that?
Manchin would vote on abortion like the repukes want if he voted today since he hasent recallebrate his beliefs like Biden has. His talking points are very much like republicans talking points. Either he is a fake dem or is owned by republican businesses pharma and coal. I mean ffs he is the only dem that is a member of fucking ALEC!
What does that tell you.
He isn't so keen on helping the poor, or working class but does not squirm about tax cuts for corporate piggies. His daughter was the criminal who made epi pens cost 700 bucks apiece. No wonder he does not want to have medicare negotiate prices of prescription drugs. Wonder if he believes society needs to become a hierarchy? His opinions about"entitlement" mentality bullshit goes against dem principal of equality. He sure has a lot of republican beliefs for a Dem. He has lunch with mitch mcConnell and private meetings with him and the repugs. What does that say about him?
I'm just looking at what he says and his beliefs and I am skeptical of him.
doc03
(35,144 posts)say there is no difference in the parties or they don't do anything. It appears the only reason to vote for a Democrat anymore is just to oppose Republicans. I gave several hundred dollars to the Biden campaign and we end up getting the Presidency and Congress. But we still can't get anything done. I voted for Biden because of his platform and if we let one Senator that keeps moving the goal posts set the agenda we will lose next year. If he can't be dealt with we need new _______.

Biden has zero Republicans and needs every single Democratic vote. If Biden threatens Manchin and he still refuses, then what?
The solution is electing more Democrats in 2022.
