'Several' people killed in Norway bow and arrow attacks, police say
Source: NBC News
A man using a bow and arrow killed several people and wounded others in attacks in the Norwegian town of Kongsberg on Wednesday, local police said.
At least four people had been killed in the attacks, public broadcaster NRK and newspaper VG reported, citing unnamed sources.
"The man has been apprehended ... from the information we now have, this person carried out these actions alone," police chief Oeyvind Aas told reporters.
"Several people have been injured and several are dead," Aas said. He declined to comment on the number of casualties.
The attacks took place over "a large area" of Kongsberg, a municipality of about 28,000 people in southeastern Norway, 42 miles from the capital, Oslo.

(1,439 posts)It's not like Norway's laws and culture can't produce a mass shooting matching (or exceeding) anything in America, so whatever point you're trying to make with this hypothetical, you didn't.
Meanwhile this is a story about violence in Norway, not a story about violence in America, and you're under no requirement to minimize it by suggesting it would be worse in America.

(12,618 posts)America has mass shootings on a nearly daily basis. Norway has had one, the one you mentioned, in the last 10 years. I never said Norway can't have a mass shooting, so you can stop putting words in my mouth. But you'd have to have your head shoved extremely far up your butt to not be aware of that rather basic fact that that gun violence is many times worse in America than it is in not only Norway but virtually every other industrial nation on Earth.
The heavy casualties from Norway's ONE major mass shooting had more to due with the fact that it occurred on an island and the victims had nowhere to run, rather than Norway is just as violent or more violent than the U.S. So don't even try and pretend that this one incident even compares to the nearly daily mass gun violence that the United States has, or that Norway has just as big of a problem or even greater with gun violence than the U.S. does. One single, devastating incident that happened 10 years ago does not compare to the near daily mass shootings that happen in the U.S.

The attackers motive was not yet clear, Aas said, but police were not ruling out terrorism. One person has performed these actions alone, he said. It is natural to consider whether it is an act of terrorism. But the man has not been questioned and it is too early to come to any conclusion.

The Norwegian public broadcaster, NRK, said police in Kongsberg, a municipality of about 28,000 people, received reports at about 6.15pm local time that a man was walking around the town centre firing a bow and arrow.

The shooting appears to have started in or near a Coop store in the city centre where there were several casualties, Norwegian media reported, citing regional government officials who said details were still very confused. Several other people were injured in different stores in the city centre, according to media reports.

The events in Kongsberg currently appear to be an act of terror, but the investigation... will determine in closer detail what the acts were motivated by, Norways intelligence service PST said in a statement. The suspect was known to PST from before, the statement added, but the agency was not able to provide further details about him.
Norwegian police chief Ole Bredrup Sæverud said the suspect was a convert to Islam and that there were previously fears linked to his radicalisation, but establishing motive would be complicated and will take time.
