As mandate kicks in, ranks of unvaccinated New York police, firefighters dwindle

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio declared his coronavirus vaccination order for emergency responders a success on Monday, with no disruption to city services, despite a sickout by some firefighters who officials said were protesting the mandate.
The mayor's Oct. 20 order, which police and firefighter union leaders said would cause staff shortages, led to an 11th-hour rush of inoculations that shrank the ranks of the unvaccinated as officials in the largest U.S. city began enforcing the mandate on Monday morning.
The vaccination rate for city's workforce of 378,000 employees, including teachers, corrections officers and other city workers who faced previous orders, rose to at least 91% over the weekend from 86% on Thursday, de Blasio said.
"Time and time again we put the mandates in place and they've worked," de Blasio, a Democrat, told a briefing.

(50,949 posts)A pension plan is vested when a person has 5 years. But they don't receive their pension usually until they are a certain age. And if they retire at an earlier eligible age it would be at a reduced rate.
Now their health care plan might be a different issue. Might not have health care after they retire and before age 65. And when they do reach 65 might not have anything from NYC to cover the rest.

(8,835 posts)firefighters/EMT's had to fight city hall for the city to pay for the Hepatitis B vaccine when it became available.......
It was a three part vaccination, costing 150 bucks for all three vaccinations.
These were the front line people who were getting puked on, deficated on, Peed on, coughed on, bled on, accidentally stuck with needles, etc etc etc
I was one of those medics, fortunate enough to be able to pay for myself. Experienced EMTs were being paid minimum wage to save peoples lives.
Getting the Hep B vaccination wasnt just too expensive, we also felt it was a job requirement that should be paid by the employer. The principle was important, but to the kids I saw aspiring to be medics and nurses, they were sorely underpaid, too. Again, not me. I was fortunate but shocked at how little lifesavers were paid.

(8,835 posts)to see the firefighters and police in Denver paid a far greater amount and benefits than the Denver government Paramedics.
In Denver, like many large cities in the U.S., the paramedics make a lot of calls every single shift. Calls where they personally have to make life or death decisions many times over in a single day.
