Schumer to tee up John Lewis voting rights bill for Wednesday

Source: The Hill

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said on Monday that he will force a vote this week on a voting rights bill named after the late Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.)

Schumer will force a vote on Wednesday on whether to debate the bill. It is expected to fail to get the 60 votes needed to advance.

“I will file cloture on the motion to proceed to the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, setting up a vote to take place on Wednesday,” Schumer said from the Senate floor.

“If there’s anything that merits debate here in the Senate, it’s protecting the precious right of Americans to participate in our elections,” Schumer added.

Because if there's one thing of which Joe Manchin is certain, it's the bipartisan nature of the Senate. 😊

2. This doesn't sound right. I wonder what the long term thinking is on this.

To force a filibuster carve-out?
Not sure it will work, but it’s an idea….

5. I see. Schumer is setting up the the obvious. Hmmm. Why should any Repubs buy into that.

They know they're not as stupid as we thought we were fair minded when they wanted a carve out.

Is Schumer -- and we, by connection -- some special kind of stupid?

As a Democrat in South Carolina, I hear right wing complaints way too much, and many hate being told who to, and how to vote. The south is still an extremely racist part of this country, and the haters really want white men to be the key citizenship.

Many “hate” minorities, women, seniors ( unless they are their relations ), LGBQT community, sorry but especially transgendered. This is what they vote for..... to keep this country pure white and heterosexual, and the Right wingers in congress and the Trumpese followers are behind them.

I live in the South. Every single thing you say drives the Southern vote. It's rationalized as 'culture' but it's really moral laziness, which corporations exploited -- all that laziness -- since the days of cotton and black bodies were their global "triangle trade" commodities.

The only way to cover Manchin and Semena is to gather at least 52 seats in the majority and then vote to cover 50 plus the VP. Progressives and these moderate will NEVER see eye to eye on anything. They may hash, rehash, rehash then cut the important verbiage in the bills, but not what we need. We need the progressives to be able to get the “helping hands” bills into law and out to all the country, so the poor right wingers in places like the south, WV, etc can see what actual help looks like.

7. Keep in mind that if it's obvious that it won't get 60 votes, Schumer will vote Nay so that he can..

....bring it up in some way in the future. It's a procedural Nay vote.

Don't bash him for that, please.
