Tectonic Summary

The October 28th, 2012 (October 27 at the location of the epicenter) M 7.7 earthquake south of Masset, Canada, occurred as a result of oblique-thrust faulting near the plate boundary between the Pacific and North America plates. At the location of this event, the Pacific plate moves approximately north-northwest with respect to the North America plate at a rate of approximately 50 mm/yr.

This earthquake is likely associated with relative motion across the Queen Charlotte fault system offshore of British Columbia, Canada. Studies of tectonics in this region suggest plate motions are taken up by strike slip faulting parallel to the plate boundary, accompanied by lesser amounts of thrust motion to accommodate the oblique nature of the plate motion vector between the two plates with respect to the orientation of the main plate boundary fault structure. This oblique component of plate motion may involve either underthrusting of the western edge of the Pacific Plate beneath North America, or be taken up on crustal faults within the North America plate. The October 28th earthquake is consistent with either scenario.

This region of the Pacific:North America plate boundary has hosted 7 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater over the past 40 years – the largest of which was a M 6.6 earthquake in 2009, 80 km to the south east of the 2012 earthquake. In 1949, a M 8.1 earthquake occurred closer to the Pacific:North America plate boundary, likely as a result of strike-slip faulting, approximately 100 km northwest of the October 28th earthquake, near the northern extent of Haida Gwaii region (formerly Queen Charlotte Islands).

One of the largest earthquakes in recorded history was in Alaska in 1964, and in the year 1700, a massive earthquake in the Oregon-Washington region triggered a huge tsunami in Japan, which was especially destructive, since there was absolutely no warning.

During the years I lived in Oregon, I experienced a 5.5 centered in the northern Willamette Valley and a 6.something centered in Seattle.

An earthquake registered at 7.7 has occurred in the Haida Gwaii Region, Earthquakes Canada reports. A tsunami warning is in effect for coastal areas of BC and Alaska from the northern tip of Vancouver Island. The quake was felt across much of north-central BC, including Haida Gwaii, Prince Rupert, Quesnel, and Houston. There have been no reports of damage at this time.

Quake with a magnitude of 7.7 strikes off Canada coast

Editor's Note: A 7.7-magnitude quake struck off the coast of Queen Charlotte Islands in Canada late Saturday, triggering a tsunami warning. No reports of major damage has yet emerged. Here are the latest developments:

Update 12 a.m. A 5.8-magnitude aftershock was felt 96 miles south of Masset, Canada, according to the USGS.

Update 11:56 p.m. More from Englehard:
He said he has not seen any major damage in his town; just a broken window. The shaking lasted for a while, he said.

Update 11:52 p.m. Fritz Engelhard, who lives in Masset, British Columbia, said he felt the tremor even though his town is 86 miles from the epicenter. Residents have been asked to seek higher ground because of the tsunami warning, he said.

Update 11:47 p.m. The tweets started populating the Twitter timeline as soon as residents felt the tremor.

I'm still shaking. earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/re…

Update 11:46 p.m. The tsunami warning is in effect for the coastal areas of British Columbia and Alaska - from the north tip of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, to Cape Decision, Alaska.
Such a warning means that all residents in those coastal regions should move immediately inland to higher ground.

Update 11:43 p.m. The Alaska Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning.

Posted at 11:40 p.m. A 7.7-magnitude quake struck off the coast of Queen Charlotte Islands in Canada late Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake had a depth of 10.9 miles.

The quake, measured at 7.1 on the Richter Scale, had its epicentre approximately 25 miles south of Sandspit on Haida Gwaii
"It wasn't like others before," said one Terrace resident. "Sometimes when a big truck rumbles by the house will shake but this was way more, the house was visibly moving as if you were in a boat."

The boundary between the Pacific and North American plates runs underwater along the west coast of Haida Gwaii, and is B.C.'s equivalent of the San Andreas Fault in California.

....on that fault. Just depends on what type of quake it was, i.e. a slip quake or a subduction quake. A slip quake does not usually create a Sunami, a subduction quake does.

I'll check what it says at USGS.

Sun Oct 28, 2012, 01:04 AM

No one felt anything in Vancouver. This quake occurred in the Haida Gwaii region (AKA Queen Charlotte Islands) hundreds of KM to the north of here. No one felt anything in Vancouver. A Tsunami warning was issued for coastal regions but again mostly in the Queen Charlotte region. That area is very sparsely populated luckily and so far there are no reports of serious damage or injuries.

I'm more concerned about what it may mean geologically for the future. I wonder if this will put extra stress on the Cascadia fault. When we get our forecasted 8 or 9 megaquake, it's coming some day, that's where it will happen and that's much closer to home here.

Oct 2012

But not by much. I think the part that just slipped was on the same fault, but it hit north of the Juan de Fuca Plate, which is the really dangerous one, because it's part of the Cascadia subduction zone.

Looks like this one hit between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate, which I'm pretty sure is a slip type fault, which I don't think is quite as dangerous.

Just saw this on CNN. They said that Hawaii has the most to be concerned about, they have already evacuated or are evacuating some coastal areas. They HAVE measured a tsunami in the ocean, so it's real not just a warning. However it seems that the coastal pacific region has little to worry about from what they said.

...most of the energy was generated directly toward Hawaii, not much to the north and south of the quake.

He said it could be 7 feet high when it gets to Hawaii, but only about 30 cm in Alaska and Vancouver Island.

He said it was like dropping a log into the water, big waves radiate from the middle of the log and small waves from the ends.

So yeah, if you are in Hawaii, get off the beach and get to high ground, NOW!
