International Criminal Court to probe abuses in Venezuela

Source: AP

By JORGE RUEDA and JOSHUA GOODMAN

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — The International Criminal Court is opening a formal investigation into allegations of torture and extrajudicial killings committed by Venezuelan security forces under President Nicolás Maduro’s rule, the first time a country in Latin America is facing scrutiny for possible crimes against humanity from the court.

The opening of the probe was announced Wednesday by ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan at the end of a three-day trip to Caracas.

Standing alongside Maduro, Kahn said he was aware of the political “fault lines” and “geopolitical divisions” that exist in Venezuela. But he said his job was to uphold the principles of legality and the rule of law, not settle scores.

“I ask everybody now, as we move forward to this new stage, to give my office the space to do its work,” he said. “I will take a dim view of any efforts to politicize the independent work of my office.”

So many young men and women have died at the hands of the corrupt military in Venezuela, check "El Helicoide", that is where most of the tortures happen, and where the bodies are taken out in bags after they kill them because excessive torture.

What will the investigation produce? I hate to say it but I don't have any faith on anything happening, so far it has all been talk, investigation, reports, etc. but no action. I do hope I am terribly wrong and the Venezuelan regime is punished and taken out of power.

It is a travesty that the USA has allowed this to happen in a country that has always been an ally and a key player in USA politics, a country where its people have always loved the USA, and geographically is such an important country for our safety.

Putin is already in Venezuela, and so are the Chinese, Hezbollah, Iran, etc. and my fear is that due to the strategically geographical location of the country, that these Putin allies may be plotting something against the USA. I don't understand why the USA government has allowed this to go so far, why it has allowed the destruction of that country which is so important to the interests of USA and other countries from South America.

I assume you want them investigated by the court first?
