"Anti-CRT" school board candidates are winning

Source: Axios

A new PAC focused on electing conservative candidates to public school boards — by raising fears about how racism is taught — won three-fourths of its 58 races across seven states on Tuesday.

Why it matters: Those wins for the 1776 Project PAC, and Glenn Youngkin's gubernatorial victory in Virginia, underscore the political potency of culture wars and COVID-related issues in schools this year — and how GOP candidates are seeking to ride the trend to new majorities.

Founder Ryan Girdusky told Axios: "My PAC is campaigning on behalf of everyday moms and dads who want to have better access to their children's education."

But, but, but: School officials are concerned there's been intense hype and misinformation around the U.S. about what's actually being taught in most schools.

They also worry politicization of school boards is sometimes translating to violence against teachers, and poorly informed decision-making.

By the numbers: Thirteen Pennsylvania school board candidates backed by the group won their races, along with 11 in Colorado, nine in Kansas, four in New Jersey, three in Virginia and two each in Ohio and Minnesota.

in their school districts.

Any scandal, any misallocation of funds, any flub, any confrontation, any large-scale problem that happens in a school district where "Anti-CRT" people won is now an "Anti-CRT" problem. It can be placed in their laps and hung around their necks, not "oh well, it happens", not liberals, not George Soros, etc.

We'll do well to remember that.

and NOT by either trying to explain it... or by saying "it's not being taught in K-12".

Because we can't explain it to white suburban moms... Fox and the right have demonized it to a point where it is toxic.

So, for now, we simply need to state "We will ban the teaching of CRT in K-12". But we will teach history. All of it. The good and the bad.

Are you going to agree not to use CRT to train teachers? No one wants to stop teaching history. Slavery, the Holocaust, and civil rights happened. We learn from it. What is objected to is demonizing white children. It is not necessary to teach history.

People aren't objecting to actual CRT, they are objecting to what they think it is. We need to find out what it means to them, and I think you are largely correct here, and deal with their beliefs, not how they are labelling their beliefs. Saying that CRT is not being taught in their school is not going to solve the problem.

We say that we encourage the teaching of history, all of it.

and quit using the term CRT.

If we want to win elections... of course if you like losing elections, lets continue to try to explain CRT.

I don't believe that you'll be able to get the Repugs to stop using the term "CRT". It's too successful a wedge, even if it has no relevance to the curriculum being taught in public schools. Maybe a better approach would be to have the Dems. start saying that they don't want CRT taught in public schools. Wouldn't hurt a thing since it isn't there anyway, and would neutralize the crap coming from the Repugs.

You are way over simplifying. The knee jerk counter is always stuff like this. There is enough on line for anyone who is interested to find what it is. It divides and blames. We taught truthful history before CRT. I learned about the evils of slavery and I was taught in a Texas school70 years ago.

Undergrad.

And I know that we've taught bits and pieces of some of the principles in HS chemistry and physics.

Quantum numbers, permitted electron transitions, tunneling and uncertainty.

And that's in 10th grade pre-AP and some of it even in on-level chemistry. I also teach astronomy, and next week I get to explain how a strong magnetic field can split certain spectral emission lines. We discussed quantum degeneracy early this week.

But we don't teach the full-blown theoretical approach. It's simplified, and guides a lot of what's taught and how it's taught. It's an integral part, once past stoich and gas laws, but nowhere near "real" quantum.

Notice: I can say "we teach it" and I can just as well say "we don't teach it." But I change the referent, the meaning, of "it" in those two sentences. 'Cept that you can't hear the difference.

You can talk about the concepts in high school (just like you could discuss CRT in theory)... but you need at least Calc II and post-calc linear algebra to actually interact with QM.

Critical Race Theory and Defund the Police are two of the worst messages to hang out hopes on. They, and others like them, are easily misunderstood and demonized by the right. Look at how the GQP messages. They can have the most loathsome ends but wrap it up in glowing patriotic terms.

I’m not saying we need to out and out lie like republicans but we need to remember America is functioning with a 7th grade level of literacy.

- Anti-CRT (framing it as teaching white kids they are inherently racist)
- $450k payments to illegal immigrants
- The Democrats out of control spending is causing high inflation and soaring fuel and grocery prices

If they are allowed to hammer just those three points alone without nipping it in the bud early, we lose a big majority of independent voters and possibly 20+ seats in the House and likely a couple in the Senate.

Whoever in the DOJ that was negotiating with the ACLU for “up to” $450k payments per person to families separated at the border is probably hiding in a broom closet at the moment since the President wasn’t aware of it and flat out said it’s not going to happen.

The problem is that their wedge issues are just enough reality based to stick.

We need to stop being so pinheaded and realise that teaching middle schoolers with a wheel of oppression and that they have done sort of original sin based on skin color is wrong. We need to shout this out loud

We need to state that we will not accept a rising murder rate and general lawlessness (shoplifting... copper theft etc) and if the police cannot bring it under control we will find some police that want to do the job.

We need to spend money building infrastructure and helping the poor. And proudly state that is where the money is going. Not for the hundredth art instalation or museum attached to a new tunnel project.

We need to find a way to build things cheaper than France. (See high speed rail)
