Grandparents await hugs, spouses reunite as US borders open

Source: AP

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The U.S. fully reopened its borders with Mexico and Canada on Monday and lifted restrictions on travel that covered most of Europe, setting the stage for emotional reunions nearly two years in the making and providing a boost for the travel industry decimated by the pandemic.

The restrictions, among the most severe in U.S. history, kept families apart, including spouses who have not been able to hug in months, grandparents whose grandchildren doubled in age since they last saw them, and uncles and aunts who have not met nieces and nephews who are now toddlers.

Lines moved quickly Monday morning at San Diego’s border with Mexico, the busiest crossing in the United States, despite the added checks for vaccinations required to enter the country.

The new rules also allow air travel from a series of countries from which it has been restricted since the early days of the pandemic — as long as the traveler has proof of vaccination and a negative COVID-19 test.

I haven't seen any of them since October 2018. 2019 was my fault (threw out my back for months) but my June/October visits in 2020 and 2021 didn't happen due to Canadian restrictions. I hope by spring things are almost back to normal.

Died 2 weeks before my flight to the US in September. I had not seen her since my brother’s funeral in March of 2019. Two weeks!

We had booked those flights back in February and basically just threw a dart for the dates. We had to cancel our trip to celebrate her 88th birthday in September 2020 because of covid and no vaccine anyway. I had invited 60 people before covid.

12. 60 people, what a shame! Sounds like she knew, though,

and that matters. Thank all the miracles for vaccines now.

For those who love to benefit from miracles. Just now heard ER volumes are currently up 30% across the country.

And she had other ailments that she refused treatments for. She was ready to go.
The relief that her suffering is over has been intense and healing in an odd way.

No regrets for parties unheld or visits that couldn't be, though. If anything, she might have seen a bit too much of some of us.

Hope to see this sadistic war on everyone who doesn't glow in the dark is overcome in our lifetimes.
