Singapore to start charging Covid patients who are 'unvaccinated by choice'

Source: Guardian

Singapore will no longer pay the Covid-19 medical bills for people “unvaccinated by choice”, the government said, as the country grapples with a surge in cases.

The government currently covers the full Covid medical costs for all Singaporeans, as well as permanent residents and long-term visa holders, unless they test positive soon after returning home from overseas.

However from 8 December, the government said it will “begin charging Covid-19 patients who are unvaccinated by choice”.

It said unvaccinated people “make up a sizeable majority of those who require intensive in-patient care and disproportionately contribute to the strain on our healthcare resources”.

I’m surprised that the profit-driven insurance companies have not raised premiums. The federal government has provided aid to hospitals, especially in Covid hot spots, but someone has to pick up the bill. Anyone who refuses to be vaccinated for no good reason should be required to pay for treatment.

regulations in the last three decades have heavily restricted their ability to use health factors in issuing or pricing polices.

In 1996, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act began prohibiting the use of health status in any group health insurance policy.

And the Affordable Care Act, passed in 2014, prevents insurers from pricing plans according to health – with one exception: smoking status.

We've always cheered those protections/expansions of availability for people needing health coverage, of course, but we didn't foresee attempted RW takeover of the government using pandemic disease and sparking rebellion against vaccination.

You don't want to vaccinate? That is fine.
You think COVID-19 is a hoax? That is fine too.
You don't want to wear a mask because it infringes on your liberty? That is fine as well.

You got COVID-19? Ok, here is the bill, which is not a hoax, and now you have the full freedom to pay the bill. Although you have choices, you can go somewhere and get hydrochloriquine, or ivermectin to try to cure yourself.

apartment complex come out of the building next to mine wearing a T shirt that said on the back in caps: UNVACCINATED, UNMASKED, UNAFRAID.

I'd like to tape a few more words on that shirt: UNBRAINED, INCONSIDERATE, UNAMERICAN.

use this as a slippery slope, and start targeting other "lifestyle/choice" illnesses--whether due to smoking, drinking, diet, etc.

Covid-deniers are providing them the perfect cover for their nefarious agenda.

If you are a smoker they already jack your rates up for at least the last 10+ years.

I would argue food is an economic issue but the labels are there for a reason. Insurance is a stats game and if you lower the denominator the rate is smaller.

COVID is a pandemic and not a lifestyle…or it should not be, make an exception in an emergency.
