How SARS-CoV-2 in American deer could alter the course of the global pandemic

Source: NPR

In September last year, computer models suggested SARS-CoV-2 could easily bind to and enter the deer's cells. A recent survey of white-tailed deer in the Northeast and Midwest found that 40% of them had antibodies against SARS-CoV-2.

Now veterinarians at The Pennsylvania State University have found active SARS-CoV-2 infections in at least 30% of deer tested across Iowa during 2020. The study, published online last week, suggests that white-tailed deer could become what's known as a reservoir for SARS-CoV-2. That is, the animals could carry the virus indefinitely and spread it back to humans periodically.

If that's the case, it would essentially dash any hopes of eliminating or eradicating the virus in the U.S. — and therefore in the world — says veterinary virologist Suresh Kuchipudi at Penn State, who co-led the study.

It's too transmissive. Covid will transition to endemic status. It is never going away.

At best we can hope it weakens to just another common cold that is just a seasonal nuisance.

The true danger of zoonotic diseases, which Covid is one of, is that the disease can mutate while in the reservoir species pool, in a manner that it may not mutate to while in the human pool and then the mutation is reintroduced to the human pool, with potentially serious consequences, as our immunity may not offer solid protection against the mutated form.

There was a paper published in 2020 that examined the shape of ACE2 receptors (how Covid attaches to us) of dozens of other mammals and it found that ACE2 receptors of White tailed deer are very similar to Humans ACE2 receptors and they concluded that there was a high likelihood that deer would be susceptible to Covid 19. Other mammals with a high likelihood were muskrats and some with a medium likelihood were deer mice and snowshoe hares, both of which are extremely common in North America.

will it still be a Chinese deep state hoax perpetuated by the liberal media or would people take it seriously?

One of the many reasons America decided on the do nothing approach last year is because it hit cities first.

25% of the vote Trump got came from the 56 counties considered "All rural" or "Mostly rural".

so that enabled COVID to spread faster in urban areas. Once people decided masks and vaccines were political issues, Dems were more likely to follow guidelines while the other side resisted socialist tyranny. We saw lockdown protests in Michigan and other swing states.

It might be different if the next pandemic originates in rural areas with deer.

Have antibodies and are no longer sick and the fields aren’t strewn with dead deer - maybe there is something to be learned here.

Don't eat dogs. Actually, don't eat beef, or other ruminants (goats, sheep, animals that chew a cud), if you don't want to come down with the human version of Johne's disease (Crohn’s).

Many sources, here's one:
https://johnes.org/zoonotic-potential/

And since deer get SARS from humans, deer should not eat humans either. Or even socialize with them.

And these people for the most part are already highly skeptical of warnings about Covid. I don't think that you're going to get much traction, telling them to stay away from deer.

Why?

It's the first day of Deer Season. Even some of the teachers go hunting. Plus a lot of the teenage boys hunt with their dads, or else with older friends.

I was in high school in the 1960's and they were doing it then, they're still doing it now. Most of them don't know about the deer having Covid though. That might change people's behavior.
