Today, on Transgender Day of Remembrance, we mourn those we lost in the deadliest year on record for transgender Americans, as well as the countless other transgender people disproportionately Black and brown transgender women and girls who face brutal violence, discrimination, and harassment, Biden said.
LGBT advocacy group the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) found 47 transgender individuals have been killed in 2021 by violent means, surpassing the record number of 44 deaths in 2020.
Black transgender women made up many of the deaths in 2021.
Transgender people are some of the bravest Americans I know. But no person should have to be brave just to live in safety and dignity. Today, we remember. Tomorrowand every daywe must continue to act, Biden said.
Biden also called on states to cease bullying disguised as legislation, saying state legislatures are putting transgender children in danger.

TDOR was started because most trans people who are found dead by murder (or sometimes, suicide) were and often still are reported by the police and thus by the news media as the name & sex/gender that was assigned to them at birth. In doing so, they are erased. We remember them because nobody else will.
It was getting better in that respect as more states began to allow trans people to update our government documentation, but in these last few years Republican held states have begun to push the clock back. They want us to be erased, they want us to be forgotten. Simply put, they do not want us to be part of public life.
This is why our day of remembrance exists, and I am saddened to say that it is needed more now than any time in the last two decades.
