She was the school principal for 16 years. Until she hung up a rainbow flag.

The school lowered the flag after she was removed from the position.
By Bil Browning Thursday, December 2, 2021

Mary Kay Thomas was a middle school principal in southwest Minnesota for 16 years. But when administrators hung a rainbow flag in the school cafeteria, the religious right started howling for her head.

..............................

Thomas hadn’t actually done anything wrong by hanging the flag and after a small group of “anti-LGBTQ middle-school staff, parents, students, and local clergy” complained, she handed out rainbow stickers to students that wanted them to show solidarity with queer kids.

While they couldn’t fire her, they hounded her until she quit, she alleges.

...........................

She says the district launched an investigation into “nonspecific workplace allegations” that should have lasted a week or two, but dragged on for months. She was placed on administrative leave and suspended without pay.

I grew up in Ohio. At the time it was all I knew, but I don’t have any memories of the religious right around there. Ended up in WA 40 yrs ago. There’s plenty RWers in some places but it seems like on western coastal side it’s fairly liberal. I don’t even think about it till I read stories from elsewhere and I know they aren’t exaggerating. I still have relatives there but have only gone back twice in 15 years. So glad I don’t live there these days.

Far right Christian means far right. You can factor out the word "Christian" when they call for public prayer. You can factor out the word "Christian" from anyone racist on the "Just as you do to the least of these" principle.
So far right is far right and no amount of flag wearing, waving or trying to announce how righteous they are will change it.

The right wing is cancel culture and always have been.

So, basically they admit to creating a hostile work environment and an attempted constructed dismissal. I doubt she can sue, but she should try anyway. She should never have quit. She kind of screwed herself over by doing that.

Not that I'd have wanted to work in such a toxic environment. This shit is why I refused to come out while I was in high school but that was the early 1990s and things were very different then. No, I wasn't given a choice in the end. My mom found out on her own (by snooping) and I got the boot, literally into the dark and the rain. I can't even begin to describe the impact of that and how it negatively affected my life. I came very close to killing myself then because I felt just so alone and worthless. This was almost thirty years ago. I'm still damaged by it in a hundred little ways and I might never fix that.

The people who did this to this principal are ign'ant [sic] monsters and the kids most affected are the exact ones most in need of that very kind of support this woman tried to give. If this were back when I was in high school I'd expect to hear of a suicide or two at that school within the next two years, but fortunately things are different now and those kids can, and will, find their own allies and support circle.

Doesn't make it any better, no, but these people don't realize they don't have any real impact anymore and are only making themselves look pathetic and cruel for cruelty's sake.

Every school has regulations to control political speech. Also, angry bigots shouldn’t have control over school personnel.

I can think the only reason this is an issue is because they want exposure in the media to share their personal beliefs.

There has to be an enlightened way to muzzle the bigots without firing the teacher. Unless, again, they want to be an example to others. And that’s child abuse—using the kids as pawns to express an adult’s political beliefs.

Total fail. Unlike the Biden bold initiatives.

No group is more hateful, more hypocritical, more self-righteous and more bigoted than the Religious Right. They are scum in my opinion. I get so sick and tired of them trying to force their "morality" down everyone's throats. They keep getting more and more embolden. As this article states they hounded a wonderful principal from her job because she committed the "crime" of putting up a gay rights flag. Oh the horror!
I am sure that Roe Vs Wade is going to be overturned---to the joy of the Religious Right--due to the conservative wingnut majority on the Court. Oh but they won't stop there! Next on the chopping block is gay rights, voting rights and maybe even contraception. They want The Handmaids Tale to be a reality! These asshats need to be fought tooth and nail!

Apparently, she believes in tolerance, and teaching the children tolerance. At the very least, she believes in equality. And, since there are undoubtedly some LGBTQ kids in the demographic, she may have saved some parent the inconvenience of a major suicide.

Yep, this Principal is my kind of Principal. Has principles and lives by them. She stepped up. How are we going to evolve if we don't have people like this teaching tolerance? I'm sorry she lost her job, but she did what she had to do. I hope I can live up to her example.
