Bond set at combined $1M after Michigan parents enter pleas

PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) A judge imposed a combined $1 million bond Saturday for the parents of the Michigan teen charged with killing four students at Oxford High School, hours after police said they were caught hiding in a Detroit commercial building.
James and Jennifer Crumbley entered not guilty pleas to each of the four involuntary manslaughter counts against them during a hearing held on Zoom. Jennifer Crumbley sobbed and struggled to respond to the judges questions at times and James Crumbley shook his head when a prosecutor said their son had full access to the gun used in the killings.
Judge Julie Nicholson assigned bond of $500,000 apiece to each of the parents and required GPS monitoring if they pay to be released, agreeing with prosecutors that they posed a flight risk.
Defense attorneys for the Crumbleys still argued Saturday that they never intended to flee and had made plans to meet their lawyers early that morning. Attorney Shannon Smith accused prosecutors of cherry picking facts to release publicly, including that accusation that their teenage son had unrestricted access to the handgun prosecutors say his father purchased for him days before the shooting.

The parents of Ethan Crumbley, a teen accused of killing four students in a shooting at Oxford High School, plead not guilty to involuntary manslaughter charges. ( 52-1 District Court via AP)

(86,802 posts)They seem to have violated some federal laws too so they will be in court for some time, they should not be released from custody while awaiting trial.

(855 posts)"JUDGE: Thank you. So in terms of the Court is required to comply with MCR 1.016. The purpose of bond is to ensure that the defendants appear in Court for all necessary Court appearances as well as to take into consideration any risk to public safety. The charges are very, very serious, no question about that. There's -- the Court does have some concern about the flight risk along with the public safety given the circumstances that occurred yesterday and the fact that the defendants did have to be apprehended in order to appear for purposes of arraignment. The Court did indicate yesterday it would conduct an arraignment at 4:00 p.m. The bond for Jennifer Crumbley at $500,000 cash surety, no 10%. In the event that Jennifer Crumbley is able to post that, the following conditions will be in place. The defendant has is not to use or test positive for marijuana or any controlled substances. Mrs. Crumbley is not to possess or have firearms or dangerous weapons. Shall not have any assaultive behavior toward anyone. Must provide a release address to pretrial services. The defendant within 24 hours of release from the Oakland County jail must submit to and pay for ETG or urinal analysis. That would be at the direction of PTS."

(49,045 posts)I tried to confirm the public defender, which I read on DU, but have not found it.
Detroit CBS say "CNN is trying a new lawyer", which makes no sense unless you tentatively insert some possible words like "trying to contact".

(5,901 posts)The school has two undercover policemen on campus. They should have been in the meeting with the parents, and if the parents didn't take charge of him, the police should have had him taken to a facility for counseling.
That the school even at that point didn't check his backpack is negligent behavior, and they can be charged.

(33,400 posts)Ethan Crumbley appears to have been seized with impulsive, homicidal, intrusive thoughts (hence the cry for help drawing), which is not unheard of in his age group. Homicidal impulse + semi-automatic firearm = shooting, but its usually a suicide.
Adam Lanza seems to have been more deliberate and methodical - he planned it for a long time.

No wonder ordinary folks have less and less respect for our legal system.
These folks are flight risks and should have no bail. Besides the fact that the crime itself is heinous.
But other Q TFG gunners of their ilk will be all over this like flies on shit, whining and making noise on RW Media and social media.

I've been poking around the 'net today. Seems that the father was married before, has an 18-yr-old son who lives with the ex-wife.
The ex-wife is not a fan of the current wife:

"Jennifer was a monster," Cobb recalled. "She could do no wrong and she was right about everything. I mean, this is exactly the kind of attitude she has. Like, she, literally, thought she was better than everyone."
As for the couple reportedly buying their son a handgun as a gift, she stated, "They pretty much gave him whatever he wanted. Why would you let a 15-year-old have access, especially knowing that just a few days prior that he was having problems at school?"
She added, "I hope they get the maximum, honestly, all of them. They deserve it. They need to be held accountable for what their child did. They need to have a reality check."
The kid who murdered his classmates is a victim also -- he never had a chance-- he would have killed someone at some time.
Then, there's this -- Kentucky legislator and his whole family posing for their Christmas card, everyone holding an AR-15.
