Max Rose to Run for House in Likely Rematch Against Malliotakis
Source: NY Times
Subhead: Mr. Rose, a moderate Democrat, lost to Representative Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican, by six percentage points last year in a conservative district that includes Staten Island.

Max Rose, a moderate Democrat who lost his congressional seat last year amid a resurgence of Republican power in parts of New York, announced on Monday that he was mounting another run for Congress, setting up a national political battleground in New York City.
The race for New Yorks 11th Congressional District, currently held by Representative Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican, could be one of the most competitive in the metropolitan area next year, along with possible races on Long Island.
Depending on the contours of the Staten Island- and Brooklyn-area district following the redistricting process, the contest may also represent one of the Democrats more promising pickup opportunities, as they strain to maintain their congressional majorities heading into a grueling midterm campaign environment.
The race may also offer a revealing snapshot of how Democrats in key battlegrounds choose to position themselves, after the Republican Party gained ground over the last year by portraying Democratic candidates as anti-law enforcement.

(67,782 posts)Yes, Staten Island does not belong in New York, either the city or the state. I'd bet the Manhattan Indians wouldn't be interested in buying it even if the price were $24.
*The Statue of Liberty is within the waters of New Jersey but falls under the jurisdiction of NY State.

(43,182 posts)You hope name recognition builds from last time, you hammer the same issues, your work on messaging and organization, you hope the incumbent is tarnished by the Jan 6 party fallout. When you have no other path, you follow the path. A progressive is not going to win Staten Island.

(5,586 posts)It's a district we lost in 2020, when we had Biden drawing 80m+ votes. In a mid-term election, I'm hoping to hang on to what we have and not get crushed.

(67,782 posts)....that was before the 2012 redistricting. Prior to 2012 the NY-11 District was entirely within Brooklyn.
Staten Island itself, which now is a major part of the "new" NY-11, has voted republican for as long as I can remember.

(67,782 posts)I've looked everywhere but haven't been able to find how Staten Island alone has actually voted over the years.

(4,845 posts)Someone mentioned NY-11 might change in the new district map giving Rose or any democrat more chances. Is there any basis for that?
George II
(67,782 posts)...that district to predominantly Democratic or at least close the gap.

(4,845 posts)It might not be helpful this year as it's supposedly a bad year for dems. But it's great that the district is more competitive which would translate to more democratic wins for the future, rather than the once in a blue moon that 2018 was.

(67,782 posts)I tried to trace back to find who represented me in the districts I lived in over the years, but it's impossible.
But I did find who represents those districts now:
Brooklyn - Hakeem Jeffries
Queens - Grace Meng
Manhattan - Jerry Nadler
White Plains - Mondaire Jones
All Democrats. In fact, Malliotakis is the only republican representing any part of New York City.

(4,845 posts)And from the looks of it, whoever that wins the seat votes or acts like an independent. Both Rose and the current republican rep voted across party line. That says a lot because they believe the district wants someone who will reach across the aisle rather than staying with the party line. There is enough swing votes that they vote like an independent rather than a hardline party rep.

Rep. Max Rose, D-N.Y.
"To the leadership, we said this very simple message: It's time for you to stop playing games. Let's stop the charade. Let's stop this stupidity. Let's put the country first."
The Problem Solvers' effort was designed to break the logjam on stalled coronavirus talks between Pelosi, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and the White House. Instead, it met with unified resistance from Pelosi and her leadership team.
In a rare move, all eight major Democratic committee chairs put out a joint statement Tuesday rejecting the bipartisan plan, saying it "falls short of what is needed to save lives and boost the economy."
I wont link it, google it to find Fox yourself.

(67,782 posts)"Manchin sucks", "Rose sucks", etc. But NEVER an alternative to any of them that could actually represent the Democratic Party in either the House or Senate.
Essentially people are attacking viable Democrats and ceding the District or Senate seat to the republicans.

(67,782 posts)If that's the way the Democratic voters of NY-11 feel, Malliotakis will be re-elected.
