Judge rejects Bannon request to delay trial until October

Federal prosecutors told a court they could try their case against Steve Bannon in one day, but the former White House strategist's attorneys want to delay a possible trial for nearly a year.

Bannon was indicted last month on a contempt of Congress charge, after he defied a subpoena in the Jan. 6 investigation, and prosecutors said Monday in a court filing the case "very straightforward" and would need only one day of testimony, while defense attorneys estimated they would need about 10 days -- and asked for an October start date.

"In our view, this is not the average criminal case on the docket – because it will take more time to obtain discovery, and more time to fully brief the issues," defense lawyers said in the filing.

Why does it take seven months to try a simple misdemeanor charge. What is there to discover in seven months that couldn't be reviewed in one month.

I have a date. January 2, 2022.

There are other cases on the court’s docket ahead of it. The lawyers have other things on their plate as well. I understand why we all want this to get priority, but in the grand scheme of things, neither the Court, nor counsel are going to clear the decks for what is just a misdemeanor trial. This is not set out inordinately far.

That is tRump’s strategy, too. Delay as long as possible. Or until a specific time that is believed to be more politically savvy. So we should not be surprised at all to see Bannon employ this strategy.

Should any defendant be treated different under the law and trial moved to next week, and how would that be justified, legally speaking, not on the internet speaking?

It about perception. He now has 8 months to spread that on his pod casts. Witch hunt!! No Magat will know or care about legal things. That is a clear win IMO.

think all their machinations with our electoral process is going to get them back in power. Hence October the close to the election day delay request. This is obvious and straightforward.

The court is not going to put a misdemeanor trial ahead of other trials just because the prosecutor wants them to. Only the defendant is allowed to ask for a speedy trial.
