SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) With more than two dozen states poised to ban abortion if the U.S. Supreme Court gives them the OK next year, California clinics and their allies in the state Legislature on Wednesday revealed a plan to make the state a sanctuary for those seeking reproductive care, including possibly paying for travel, lodging and procedures for people from other states.
The California Future of Abortion Council, made up of more than 40 abortion providers and advocacy groups, released a list of 45 recommendations for the state to consider if the high court overturns Roe v. Wade the 48-year-old decision that forbids states from outlawing abortion.
The recommendations are not just a liberal fantasy. Some of the states most important policymakers helped write them, including Toni Atkins, the San Diego Democrat who leads the state Senate and attended multiple meetings.
Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom started the group himself and in an interview last week with The Associated Press said some of the reports details will be included in his budget proposal in January.

On Wednesday Dec. 8, 2021, a group of abortion providers and advocacy groups recommended California should use public money to bring people here from other states for abortion services should the U.S. Supreme Court overturn Roe v. Wade. The report has the backing of key legislative leaders, including Senate President Pro Team Toni Atkins, a Democrat. (AP Photo/Rich Pedroncelli, File)

(70,268 posts)one of the reasons we didnt close a bridge from missouri, which was talked about last year, was that planned parenthood had just opened a huge clinic right over the bridge.

(22,280 posts)This is totally a throwback to the pre-Roe world.
If you could afford it, you were on a plane to California, Illinois, NY and a couple of other places that I can't remember. WA and OR maybe, or HI?
I know people who did that

(16,559 posts)I'm not sure about any of the other places you mentioned, but abortion was illegal in Illinois until the Roe decision. I had to fly to New York myself to get a safe, legal abortion in September 1972. (Roe happened about 5 months later.) The clinic I used had so many out of state patients flying in that they actually ran a shuttle service to and from the major airports.
Nowadays, it's a different matter. Illinois has already become an abortion haven for people inI neighboring states who need an abortion, and we fixed our trigger laws so that if Roe falls, it will still be legal here.

(3,050 posts)My concern remains, whether state or federal action (or inaction) bans or severely restricts abortions, we'll just roll back to the bad old days that I grew up in where there were abortion purveyors, many not even medically trained, performing back alley procedures. And women suffered and died. Not to mention the stress, stigma, lack of support, legal consequences and all the rest that will go with that if they can't afford to go to CA but still want an abortion. On this issue alone, I am constantly amazed on the number of women who can support GOP candidates.

(12,356 posts)overturning Roe v Wade, but it will be extremely rough for 95% of the women in states that passes laws on shorten very shorter weeks concerning when a women can have an abortion, and the day after pill will not be legal (black markets will make a killing). Of course the well to do will have no problems, but the poor will have problems, plus many of those states have cut back Medicaid (Medi-Cal here in California). Therefor, besides no abortions, these women who are monetary struggling will have no healthcare to boot and since the GQP don't believe in entitlements for these struggling women and children -
It's just F-uped.
The so called "Christian" RWers will be on California like white on rice.

(43,363 posts)Not to mention brain drain, capital flight, and some business departures. Once you go down this rat hole, it's like a currency devaluation because it is a decrease in freedom and lifestyle. Third-world countries that have experienced inflation, currency valuation experience all those same solutions. You can only fool the public for so long. It just seems like eternity.

(16,559 posts)The National Network of Abortion Funds maintains a database of organizations in each state that work to remove financial and logistical barriers to abortion access. Some of them work with clinics to help pay for abortions, while some of them offer support such as transportation, childcare, translation, doula services, and somewhere to stay for those who have to travel to get an abortion.
Those who want to support abortion access can donate directly to NNAF at their site or find information there about regional, state, and local organizations to donate to: https://abortionfunds.org/
