Donald Trump's new social network has "highly suspect" Brazil ties, claims watchdog group

Source: Salon via MSN

A government watchdog group on Thursday called on Congress to investigate whether former President Donald Trump used the power of his presidency to help lay the groundwork for his planned social network before leaving office.

In October, Trump announced the launch of a social network and media platform through Digital World Acquisition Corp., a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) that would merge with the newly-formed Trump Media & Technology Group. The SPAC, which has already come under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission and other federal regulators amid scrutiny of its fluctuating stock price, was incorporated in December 2020, while Trump was still in office, according to Delaware records. The SPAC's chief financial officer is Brazilian lawmaker Luiz Philippe de Orléans e Braganza, a close ally of right-wing Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, sometimes described as the "Trump of the Tropics."

Around the same time as the SPAC was formed, Trump made several moves to benefit the Bolsonaro regime and the Brazilian president returned the favor, endorsing Trump ahead of his failed re-election bid. Trump struck a trade deal with Brazil before the 2020 election and declared Brazil a "major non-NATO ally" while removing COVID-based travel restrictions previously imposed on the South American nation.

Well OF COURSE he'd sell out the country for his own interests. EVERYTHING is about HIM!!!! Never once did he think of being President as service to his country. It was all about how he could use it to make himself richer and more powerful.

Like many dairy farmers in California's Central Valley, Nunes is of Portuguese descent and probably speaks the language of Bolsonaro.

Politically Nunes and Bolsonaro are brothers.

Portuguese farmers were not welcomed by the "White Anglo Saxon Protestant" farmers who were already here in California, mostly near the coast, so they settled "out in the tules," as my grandma and her sister used to say. My grandma and her sister were born in San Francisco to dairy farmers who got here before the Portuguese.

The Central Valley is now experiencing a weird alliance of conservative Catholicism and Oklahoma style Evangelicalism. (Dust Bowl refugees faced similar rejection when they came to California.) These conservative churches preach politics. That's how people like Nunes get elected.

millions of rubles and riyals will flow into Trump's "social network" and all of that money will not be regulated by campaign finance laws.

I had to laugh when the watchdog group called on Congress. What do they want Congress to do? Subpoena people? I would say get DOJ to investigate but it is busy defending the office of the president in the E. Jeanne Carroll defamation law suit.

Even I received an offer to join his social media site. I rarely use my phone. I rarely get spam. Did he use the emergency numbers that were part of the Federal program to contact us in case of an emergency.
