National Archives: Meadows may not have stored all Trump-era records 'properly'

Source: Politico

Mark Meadows and the National Archives are in talks over potential records he did “not properly” turn over from his personal phone and email account, the presidential record-keeping agency confirmed Thursday.

“NARA is working with counsel to Mark Meadows to obtain any Presidential records that were not properly copied or forwarded into his official account,” a NARA spokesperson said in a statement to POLITICO.

A source close to former President Donald Trump’s ex-chief of staff confirmed that Meadows is working with the National Archives to turn over any documents that he was supposed to provide upon the end of Trump's term.

“Not worried about it at all,” the source said, speaking candidly on condition of anonymity. “All necessary and appropriate steps either were or are being taken.”

Just think:

If we had a precedent for locking up members of the Executive Branch like cabinet members and the chief of staff for not turning over records like they should, we could throw him in jail.

Just for the Federal Records Act, it's one year per email or memo.

It's another year per email or memo because it also violates the Freedom of Information Act.

And if he kept sole possession of any such record, each incident is an embezzlement charge under federal law.

Unfortunately, we had a Secretary of State in recent years who had tens of thousands of emails which she kept sole possession of for several years after she was out of office. And we collectively as a nation chose to turn our heads and look the other way. (And I'm personally guilty of that looking the other way because I campaigned for her presidential runs twice.)

Should Meadows be in jail over this?

Sure.

Will he be in jail over this?

No, he's too highly placed in government to be held accountable. Neither party wants to "go there" even though there's low-ranking former federal employees are sitting in jail for these same charges.

Aides would tape them back together for compliance with the Presidential Records Act of 1978.

Yeah, the only reason he isn't guilty is that aides went through his trash and cleaned up after him.

And Trump when he found out tried to fire everyone in that records department.
