Destructive wind storm blasting central U.S. with rare tornado threat in the north
Source: Washington Post
Winds have gusted to 70 to 100-plus mph. Minnesota and northern Iowa could see their first December tornadoes on record as derecho bears down on region.
Half of the Lower 48 faces a dangerous weather event Wednesday into the night as an extremely powerful storm system sweeps through the middle of the country unleashing damaging winds and, in some areas, tornadoes, dust storms and out-of-control fires. So severe are the conditions that the National Weather Service is calling it a historical weather day.
Weather alerts of different types affect about 100 million Americans.
The Central U.S. has never seen a December storm like this, tweeted Bill Karins, a meteorologist for MSNBC. Multi-hazard, life-threatening weather today.

From New Mexico to Michigan, more than 36 million people are under high-wind warnings. Winds of 70 to 100-plus mph have already damaged structures, overturned vehicles, toppled trees and caused tens of thousands of power outages while contributing to hazardous ground and air travel.
Amid the high winds, blinding dust storms have swelled over parts of southeast Colorado and western Kansas, with wildfires erupting in the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles.

A big tree hovering over our drive so that comes down tomorrow. That was one very scary storm that came through. We will find more stuff tomorrow I am sure. For now I am very grateful for our generator and the few rooms that it lights up. Everyone around here has nothing so it may be a while.
The wind is still howling. It is really loud. Now it smells like burning. Later...................

(108,034 posts)An intense storm system moving from the Rockies into the Plains is producing severe weather, tornadoes and extreme fire danger while also bringing widespread damaging winds on Wednesday.
Winds gusting up to 107 mph in Lamar, Colorado, have toppled semi-trucks, ripped off roofs, and toppled trees, according to Mayor Kirk Crespin.
"It's been an interesting day here in Lamar, and a record-breaking day for wind," he said. "Gusts have caused widespread damage."
Wednesday's storm outbreak is unusual for this time of year and comes on the heels of one of the deadliest weather events in history.

He was warning about the tornado situation at least 4 days before hand, and the same thing with this wind event as well.
This was his predictions from yesterday.
